Twins Die In Bathtub, Authorities Investigate For Possible Crime

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Authorities are investigating the deaths of twin babies
found floating in a bath tub and it could take up to a month as they
determine whether a crime occurred, police said Tuesday.
Nadia Chevenfant, 34, told investigators she had just given her two
10-month-old twins a bath along with her 22-month-old daughter on Monday
when she left the room to retrieve towels. It's unclear if she had drained
the tub before leaving.
She said she returned about five minutes later to find the water in the tub
running and the two babies -- Stanley and Esterlyne -- floating motionless,
said Palm Beach County sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera.
The 22-month-old was unharmed.
A neighbor performed CPR, and the twins were taken to a hospital where they
were pronounced dead. Autopsies were planned for this week.
"This type of investigation usually takes some time," Barbera said. "If they
had gone to the scene and it was evident that probable cause existed that a
crime occurred, they would have arrested a suspect."
Barbera said investigators had 30 days to turn over their findings to the
state attorney's office.
Neighbor Monica Ritchie, 44, a certified nurse's aide, said she tried to
save the kids by performing CPR.
"There was water around them, and their eyes were closed," Ritchie said. "I
tried to save them. I told myself I was going to do it, but I couldn't."
Neighbors said the family had recently moved from Spring Valley, N.Y.
Sheriff's Detective Lowell King, who interviewed Chevenfant, said she was
"very distraught. She's very upset."
