FORT PAYNE, Ala. -- The tragic death of a five-year-old girl in Fort Payne

is under investigation today.

Authorities said Vanessa Underwood was shot in the chest with a pellet gun

and died Sunday afternoon at a local hospital. Fort Payne Police Chief David

Walker told The Huntsville Times she was shot by her 6-year-old brother.

"It's devastating. You can't really hold anybody responsible...it happens,"

Fort Payne resident David Houle told WAFF-TV.

DeKalb County sheriff's investigators said the shooting was accidental and

no charges were immediately filed.

Resident Sheryl Long told WAFF, "I never would have never thought a little

girl would have died from a BB shot."
