Unable to restore a Windows Backup image

I have a Dell Precision with a RAID 0 disk array. One of the drives failed, has been replaced, and the array has been recreated. The computer is exactly the same as it was before the drive failure, except that the new drive is a different brand the Windows installation is fresh. It was Windows 7 Pro x64. I have the external disk with the weekly Windows Backup. When I boot from Windows 7 x64 system restore media and attempt to restore the backup image I get this message:
The selected system image cannot be restored in this recovery environment. To restore this system image, insert a system repair disc or a Windows installation disc (x86).
So I tried a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit system restore disk. The error then is:
The system image restore failed. Error details: A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log. 0x80042302
Why can't I restore the image?
