Last week two local boys were out booze cruising, which is a favorite past time for many here in the frozen tundra as there isn't much else to do (another reason I'm getting the **** out of here, but that's a different story). The driver hit an approach, and with such force that it ripped the cab clear from the pickup bed. It was so tore up, that they had to load up the pieces on a 40 foot trailor bed just to haul it off. Both young men were killed instantly.
One of the girls who works for me just graduated high school and was scheduled to attend college this fall on a sports scholarship. She's a bright, funny, charismatic girl but she likes to party a little too hard and her parents let her (they are both alcoholics). She attended the funeral of the young men who died from drinking and driving.
This morning she calls me and tells me she can't work tonight because she was in an accident. Ok. I find out from another employee that she was out partying last night and since she was "the most sober", designated to drive back into town. She wound up rolling the vehicle and didn't get a scratch on her. One of the boys riding along with her is now in critical condition. The other is dead.
Her scholarship has been revoked, and she is being charged with a DUI and a possibility of manslaughter. She turns 18 years old a week from today.
Driving drunk. Just don't do it.
