What kind of HP are you running on your XC machines?

Recommended Posts

I've been getting claims i wouldn't stand a chance with my cam, pipe, and lid off. apparently my 40hp won't hold a candle to a 55hp 450 in the woods.

I've always believed that XC racing is 90% rider and 10% machine. Suspension is much more important than hp on these XC races.

I wanted to see what kind of numbers you trail guys are pushing? Anybody that rides trails outta know that ponies don't win races.

p.s. if you don't ride trails or XC please keep your comments to yourself, lol i'm looking for experienced answers.

my quad = 40hp give or take.

I agree with you, a 55hp machine vs a 40hp machine with equal riders doesn't have much of an advantage in the tight stuff. Now when you get to ttrying to take the holeshot or when you break out of the woods into the faster sections you may fall behind.

What class are you looking to enter? An A class rider on a stock machine can put a hurtin' on a C class rider on a built machine.

XC racers usually stay under 55hp, easier to hang on to.. they also prefer the 04/05 carbs because there is less of a hit.

55+HP is hard to hang onto for a 2 hour race.. it would be hard to use that much power through tight paths.. anywhere else It'd be a different race though.

If your machine had 40, with suspension and another guy had a wicked built motor, well the guy with less power and the better setup woulf prevail.

I have seen some monster XC bikes that put out some serious numbers. I think it all depends on experience. If your a 325lbs rider, then yea........ I can see you needing every ounce of power. IMO....... I think a 55hp would be pushing the reliability of the engine for 1.5-2 hours straight non-stop. There is a ton of factors involved needing that type of engine and setup.

I think Im right around 48-50 HP on my 2007.

For the record. My buddies 2008 KTM 525XC puts out 54hp. Thats with only a higher compression piston he put in during the rebuild.

You have to remember, thats a 525 engine. I think he was around 56hp when he had the 540cc kit on it.

And 55hp is no where near the reliability limit in these motors. A duner will pull hard to the rev limiter for a couple hour ride with 60+ all day.

Aren't there many KTMs racing XC? Aren't all of them over 50?

I have a 2008 KTM 450XC. Its no 50+ bike. lol I wouldn't run a 55HP bike, thats just me. I understand that a duner will pull the rev limiter and they need to do that. A XC racer will bounce off the rev limiter constantly non stop for 2 + hours. No breaks, just balls to the wall.
