When I try to install software I get a Windows 7 message "Setup/Uninstall has stopped working"

I upgraded my Windows Vista Home and installed Windows 7 Professional.  When I try to install software such as anti virus, Quicken, etc.  I get a message "Setup/Uninstall has stopped working".  Can you tell me how to fix this problem?  Thanks!
