when running windows defender offline beta, program says it needs update, but unsuccessful...

Using Widows XP. Had virus attack causing Hidden Task Bar Can't cut and Paste, Windows Security Essentials could not scan, Lost Internet Explorer function, Could not Restore. Tried Booting up with Windows Defender Offline Beta, downloaded today. (Should be current) Yet, program said needs "Update". Update was unsuccessful. So, Defender could not Scan.
Please Help!
