windows did not pass authentication

A message that popped up from Security Essentials, said something to the effect that my Windows installation did not pass authentication or validation. It also said to go online to fix this or else Security Essentials would stop protecting within 30 days. When I went online Windows asked my permission to install an add on. I granted permission and was taken to a page that was advertising Windows 7. What is up with all of this?
