windows update errors when checking for new updates - C0000034

Hi,
I am getting a C0000034 error when checking for updates with windows update.

This is not related to SP1 install as that was installed a long time ago and there have been subsequent updates installed. The last successful update was on the 10th Nov 2011. I have tried various things to fix the issue including clearing the update cache but to no avail. The error below is what it shows in event viewer.
