Windows Updates won't download no matter what I try

A while back, my computer was hit with a really bad strain of the Google virus and after removal, Windows Updates and System Restore no longer work.  I tried downloading the updates manually from the Windows Update website manually using IE but I keep

getting the following message:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

For self-help options:

<ul>

<li>Frequently Asked Questions

</li><li>Find Solutions

</li><li><a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=9581" target="_blank">Windows Update Newsgroup</a>

</li></ul>

For assisted support options:

<ul>

<li><a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=21608" target="_blank">Microsoft Online Assisted Support</a> (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

</li></ul>

How do I download them if this keeps popping up?  I've tried everything I can think of to update my Windows XP for months and nothing works.  I tried doing it by going to System in Control Panel as well.  What can I do at this point?
