WORD WILL NOT HOLD MY DEFAULTS

Just installed Office 2010. I have changed the defaults for both Word and Excel. I have asked both to save for all documents. Excel has saved the font and settings but Word will not save my settings as a default. Have tried several times. Have also "repaired" Office from the disk. Same problem. Have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
