XP Internet Security 2012 virus.

I have MS Security Essentials and recently was infected by the XP Internet Security 2012 virus. Why didn't MSE prevent it? I see posts from other people going back to June 2011 when they got this virus, so MS has been aware of it. (I have fixed the problem, so I'm ok now.)
