Don't go in the Senate rest room alone!! he might be in there lurking!! GOP Senators Distance Themselves From Craig 10/5/2007 3:10:03 PM Senator Larry Craig, much to the dismay of the Republican leadership, announced this week that he would remain in office despite his arrest in an airport bathroom sex sting. In a statement after a Minnesota court judge refused to let the Idaho Republican withdraw his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge stemming from his arrest at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Craig said he planned to remain in the Senate until his term ends in January 2009. "When my term has expired, I will retire and not seek re-election," Craig said. "I hope this provides the certainty Idaho needs and deserves." The 62-year-old three-term senator, who was arrested on suspicion of making sexual advances to an undercover police officer in the next bathroom stall, previously had announced that he would step down on Sept. 30. Calling the incident "embarrassing" for the Senate and for his party, Sen. John Ensign, the Nevada Republican who leads the caucus' 2008 election efforts, said Craig should resign as he said he would. "He gave us his word he would do something, and he's backing out on us, and I don't think that's the right thing to do," Ensign told reporters on Friday. Craig, who has denied any wrongdoing and said that he only pleaded guilty in hopes of making the case go away, was ordered to pay $575 in fines and fees and sentenced to one year of probation. In a 27-page ruling Thursday, Hennepin County, Minn. Judge Charles Porter ruled that "because the defendant's plea was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and because the conviction is supported by the evidence ... the defendant's motion to withdraw his guilty plea is denied." "I am extremely disappointed with the ruling issued today," Craig said in his statement. "I am innocent of the charges against me. I continue to work with my legal team to explore my additional legal options." The Senate Ethics Committee has indicated it will investigate his conduct if Craig decided to remain in office. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who called Craig's arrest "unforgivable," said that the matter is now in the hands of the ethics panel, which could censure the senator. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., the first member of Congress to call on Craig to step down, said Friday in a statement that Craig should resign immediately. "Serving in the United States Congress is one of highest honors in America," Hoekstra said. "It is a position of leadership with many demands upon the individual whom voters have elected to represent them, and one of the most important is to exhibit behavior that upholds the dignity of the office," Hoekstra added. "Senator Craig has consistently fallen far short of that standard over the past two months."
