That seems to be the essential attraction of them to the gun lobby. They aren't really a means of obtaining food anymore, for the vast majority of the population, the vast majority of the time. Obviously a gun isn't going to offer protection from everything; but neither does it need to. There are more than enough perfectly legitimate things that it can protect against. I do know for an absolute fact that it will protect me from someone trying to break into my home late at night.
