ToriAllen Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 He should pay for what he did, but the 3 strikes rule is bullshit. You're right. What is with three strikes? If you are stupid enough to repeat the crime once, that should be it. Life in prison for not learning your lesson the first time around. Let's institute the two strike law. I think a second chance is good enough. Giving a third chance seems ludicrous. Quote Smart men learn from their own mistakes; Wise men learn from others. Umm...you missed the point. The three strikes law puts too many people in jail for bullshit crimes. Caught smoking Pot 3 times? You're in jail for life. Steal 3 candy bars from a store? Jailed for life. Granted, these people are stupid, but you don't normally want to spend your tax money on stupid people. Why do you want to now? And what your saying would make you pay even more. Oh, I forgot, taxpayers want overcrowded jails so they can feel safe. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
skategreen Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 No. But everyone who lives around me is on their second strike anyway, so that's security enough I was curious, ... just because it hadn't seemed as though you had experienced a nasty break-in due to your leniency .... I hate having stuff stolen from me. I've had 3 break-ins, and wouldn't moan about what was lost - but I hated coming home to the mess and the feeling of being violated - someone had pawed through my things in a frantic pace looking for anything valuable. Luckily nothing near and dear was stolen. My daughter's break-in - DIFFERENT. I'm PISSED about the pearls. I'm pissed at the violation - we had a nice happy game with "sweet sixteen pearls" and some druggie loser screwed with that. I'm PISSED about the antique watch. There's a wonderful story behind the watch - a family story. Gone. Bastard took it. Someone stole my Dad's ring from my sisters workplace office. BASTARD. Dad's dead. That was Suz's momento of his. NOTHING can replace it. EVER. I don't give a tin shit about the 40 bucks an asshole took off my dresser top. But I'd beat the living shit outta the guy who took my key-wound pocket watch. Three strikes - for candy bars.. oh I won't bother to argue. The bastard in Question, the original post - does B & E's for a living. He regularly goes in and steals things - and you can damn well bet he has pocketed family heirlooms and cherished bits. What would you say to someone who burned your entire collection of family photos - (with no back up CDs or negs ) .... It's a low evil I don't care to share the planet with. It's a carelessness for others that I find untenable. So he helped catch a child molester. GOOD. Glad about that. Redeems nothing. It does not take away the pain he caused anyone else. He owes amends to each and every person he's ever stolen from. Maybe while being locked up he may come to realize that. I'm glad he's off the streets. Until he swore off stealing and made amends, he has forfeited his right to mingle. Quote The thought manifests as the word. The word manifests as the deed. The deed develops into habit. And the habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and its ways with care. And let it spring from love, born out of concern for all beings. - Buddha

After reading JW's post I am beginning to see where you're comming from Torrie. Maybe the guy will be a little smarter 20 years from now when he gets out on parole. ToriAllen Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Actually, it can include misdemeanors if there are 2 felony counts before it. http://www.lawinfo.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/Client.lawarea/categoryid/137 I was wrong about the 3 misdemeanors though...oops. I thought I heard it somewhere...anyhoo... That was enlightening. Especially the link to this page: http://www.lawinfo.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/Client.lawarea/categoryid/139 One of the previous felonies has to be considered violent. And only some states go by the two felonies and a misdemeanor. Others use three felonies. It would be interesting to find out which states institute which version of the law. Yeah, they should just have one law about that. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
