Old Salt Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 Well, the stock market is still plunging. My guess is that the people who get hurt the worst will be those people who make their own trades (amateurs) and panic selling now. The professionals will be buying up those cheap stocks and holding on to what they have until the market improves. When the market goes back up, those amateurs will be back in and make the professionals and their clients rich(er). The Europeans are having some of the same problems. Their problem is that the EU really has no comprehensive plan (or even the ability) to do anything about these events. But that's just my opinion. Quote

Old Salt Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 It must be the National Guard, wez. US military is banned from participating in actions inside the US (and no, stationing them on the border for border security is not banned - after all, they're supposed to be ensuring the security of the country). National Guard can be used for riot control and things like that. I'm not sure if any governor would relish using them for that after Kent State. Quote

Not sure.. just heard some troops have had to go to training for "civil unrest" and are no longer going to Iraq.. Here in MN and in California.. Heard it on talk radio this morn.. Some conservative station that has Rush and Hannity everyday.. It was a morning show with a local guy, who is a riot, and pretty damn smart.. and he said a reliable source he knew in the military gave him the info.. and a couple people from near the airport called in about the unusual activity while I was listening.. The Guard may be doing their annual training since their trip got canceled. Since crowd control (sounds better than riot control, doesn't it?) is part of their job description, they probably did a hurry-up job of arranging training. Quote

Always good for sure.. but don't wanna see em patrolling our streets either.. here's a couple links we can check out.. Infoshop News - October 1st: U.S. Troops Training for Domestic Unrest Army deploys combat unit in US for possible civil unrest For the first time ever, the US military is deploying an active duty regular Army combat unit for full-time use inside the United States to deal with emergencies, including potential civil unrest. Beginning on October 1, the First Brigade Combat Team of the Third Division will be placed under the command of US Army North, the Army’s component of the Pentagon’s Northern Command (NorthCom), which was created in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with the stated mission of defending the US “homeland” and aiding federal, state and local authorities. The unit—known as the “Raiders”—is among the Army’s most “blooded.” It has spent nearly three out of the last five years deployed in Iraq, leading the assault on Baghdad in 2003 and carrying out house-to-house combat in the suppression of resistance in the city of Ramadi. It was the first brigade combat team to be sent to Iraq three times. While active-duty units previously have been used in temporary assignments, such as the combat-equipped troops deployed in New Orleans, which was effectively placed under martial law in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this marks the first time that an Army combat unit has been given a dedicated assignment in which US soil constitutes its “battle zone.” Great.. fantastic.. With any luck maybe a hero will kick in my door. Quote

Old Salt Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 I didn't look at the markets today. Went to the casino, where I could get a better return on my money. Had just as much luck as the stock market. I remember mentioning on Tuesday that I thought the market would end up under 9,000 on Friday. Quote
