Provocative Act doctrine

It rarely comes up but in certain cases, this is used to charge people with murder, as in this case:

Three black men break into a white man's home and in the process of robbing him, they attacked his family and his stepson was severely hurt:

Edmonds' stepson, Dale Lafferty, suffered brain damage from the baseball bat beating he took during the melee. The 19-year-old lives in a rehabilitation center and can no longer feed himself.

 

The homeowner defended himself and his family with a gun, killing two of the attackers and the prosecutors want to charge the remaining attacker with murder under the Provacative act doctrine.
