If not for the increased abortion rate following Roe v. Wade Al Gore would be President. The best argument in favor of abortion.

I wish it were that simple to not have abortions, but factors such as rape, neglectful-abusive parents have changed my mind. I have a stepbrother who is a lifer in jail for murder because of his upbringing, he was taken away from my mother (rightfully so) at a very young age due to neglect, then he went from foster home to foster home and was raped and abused. He was sent to prison in his early 20s, and escapes every 10 years or so. His life was and still is hell. I've also seen so many men and women neglect their children due to addictions or pure selfishness that it makes me sick. They also seem to get away with it, and the children grow up sad, with no self-esteem, and usually become drug addicts too. I'd rather see a child go back to god then grow up like that. People need to be responsible from the get go, getting drunk and pregnant is inexcusable imo, when you know that you could create a life you need to take that seriously and prepare for it.

Most abortions are from women who already have kids, their not married, and either did not use protection at all, or did not use it "every" time they had sex in the month they got pregnant.

Most abortions have nothing to do with abuse, rape, incest, or medical need, it is about a method of birth control, period.

I will never suppoort killing children because someone "thinks" the kid will be bad or live the life of a criminal. Who can say the same child will grow up to cure cancer?

I bring up the story of Oprah Winfrey a lot because here we have a black girl, who endured the "real" racism of old, not the softer, gentler forms used to file lawsuits for not getting a promotion. She survived getting raped numerious times, she survived many hardships, and she is the richest woman in television today.

No, let's not "assume" any child is better off dead.

Oprah's father loved her, as did her mother. Yes she endured many hardships, but her parents wanted her.

I agree about abortion being used as birth control - it is wrong; but should people who do not want children or would abuse them be forced to have them?

I think every effort should be made to avoid getting pregnant in the first place if a person doesn't want to have a child.

I don't know how much they wanted her. Oprah lived with her grandomther till she was six. After that she lived with her mother but suffered molestation in her mother's home and ran away at the age of thirteen. She was sent to a detention facility but it was too full to accept her and they then sent her to live with her father.

No, her parents did not truly want her and they allowed her to be molested and abused.

In the short tern, yes. It would take some time to settle in but if abortion was no longer an option, people would start being more careful.

We should not be lowering standards just because some don't want to measure up. There are huge waiting lists in every town in America for infants to be adopted. If women don't want their children adoption is a great alternative to killing them.

And the only way to do that is to "force" people to take responsibility for risky sex. Don't forget there are lots of STD's running around out there because of all the unprotected sex as well so this could help with those as well.

The fact her parents were negligent doesn't mean they didn't love her. Your hearing her side of the story. But you know I concur with everything else you're saying. I don't know if drugs or alcohol were involved (probably) but that's just another reason for education and intervention that can be paid for instead of incarceration of minor drug charges.

If they wanted and loved her so much, why was she living with her grandmother till the age of six?

Why did she feel her only option to get away from the abuse was to run away?

Why was going to live with her father a last option "after" the detention facility could not take her?

Either way, my point was Oprah endured a massive amount of abuse and definately did not have a lifetime of a supportive and loving family structure. She overcame all that, and a society that had open and even encouraged double standards for blacks in America.

If she can overcome all that and become the richest woman in television, there are no excuses and also no preset lives by circumstances.

We should not be killing kids just because we "think" the child will not have a good future.

A little more perspective in the argument for abortions for medical reasons:

Like any thrilled mother to be, Michelle Stepney cherished the first kicks she could feel from her unborn babies.

But her lively twin girls were doing more than simply making their presence felt.

Each little kick was saving their mother's life.

Unknown to her, Mrs Stepney, 35, had developed cervical cancer. Her unborn twins' constant kicking in the womb actually managed to dislodge the tumour.

It was only when Mrs Stepney was taken to hospital with a suspected miscarriage that doctors realised she had cancer.

They told her the babies had saved her life. Without them, the cancer may not have been discovered until it was too late.

Then came another bombshell. In order to treat the cancer, she needed immediate chemotherapy and a hysterectomy, which would mean terminating the pregnancy.

Mrs Stepney refused. "I couldn't believe it when the doctors told me that the babies had dislodged the tumour," she said.

"I'd felt them kicking, but I didn't realise just how important their kicking would turn out to be.

"I owe my life to my girls, and that's why I could have never agreed with a termination."

Instead, she waited for her lifesaving treatment until they had been born.

Now the proud mother of year-old girls Alice and Harriet, Mrs Stepney has been given the all-clear.

She and her husband Scott, 36, a civil servant, were told they were expecting twins at a 14-week scan.

The couple, who also have a five-year-old son, Jack, were thrilled. But three weeks later, Mrs Stepney was back at the hospital with a suspected miscarriage.

"I was just in shock when the doctors told me what it was. When they said that the babies had literally kicked my tumour out, I just couldn't believe it.

"If I hadn't been pregnant with the twins, the cancer may not have been discovered until it was too late.

"I knew I could have an operation straight away and it would cure me of the cancer, but that would mean getting rid of my babies and I couldn't do that.

"I had two lives inside me and I just couldn't give up on them - especially after they had saved me like this."

Doctors at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London agreed to give Mrs Stepney reduced chemotherapy in the hope of stopping the cancer spreading during the pregnancy.

"The doctors had tried this with women who were pregnant before, but they hadn't treated a woman with twins before. I knew it was our only hope," she said at her home in Cheam, South-West London.

She had chemotherapy every fortnight and was constantly scanned to monitor the babies' development.

"The doctors didn't know what the chemotherapy would do to the twins, and the first time I had it, I dreaded what it was doing to the girls. But they actually carried on growing well."

The twins were delivered by caesarean-section 33 weeks into the pregnancy, in December 2006. Alice weighed 3lb 11oz and Harriet 3lb 5oz.

"They were born without any hair as a result of the chemotherapy, but other than that, they were healthy.

"When I heard them both let out a cry it was the best sound in the world."

Four weeks later Mrs Stepney had a hysterectomy to remove the tumour. Tests showed the cancer had not spread.

The twins have just celebrated their first birthday and are thriving. Mrs Stepney, an accountant, had a scan in December which showed she was still free from cancer.

She has been nominated for a Woman of Courage award by Cancer Research UK Race for Life and will be honoured at a ceremony in London on February 12.

"I've had wonderful support from my husband and I couldn't have got through it without him," she said. "I feel so lucky. And one day I will tell my daughters how they saved their mummy's life."
