Fifteen years in jail for being with a drug dealer. Thats insane let alone seventeen for selling it. Holy crap. What a mixed up society we live in. We need lower sentences for drugs and longer ones for violent crimes.

NEVER FORGOTTEN

I believe penalties for crack tend to be higher because the resulting harm to society of that form of cocain is harder.

I know several people who got hooked on crack and even though they are now clean, they are completely different people, their mental abilities are lowered and their attitudes/frame of mind are changed.

Crack is a very nasty product.

I think that's because of the difference in the socioeconomic status of the typical users.

Cocaine has taken many a person to their knees too.. But the sentences, like Snaf said, are ridiculous. We don't need more people in prison, specially drug users. If we do, we need to lock up drunks too.

tired of paying to house crackheads and provide 3 squares a day for them whilst good people sleep under bridges and root through dumpsters for dinner.

I agree with wez- homeless people should be locked up too.

or they could take the money spent on the crackheads, and use it to help the homeless.

Most crackheads are either homeless or are on their way to being homeless, all a crackhead can think about is their next rock, they rarely even eat. I have seen very wealthy businessmen be reduced to nothing and living on the streets in less than a year.

Drug abusing people are not islands, they harm way more then just themselves and their families. Think of all the branching damage they cause from defaulted loans all the way to the criminal acts they do to pay for their habit after their income drys up.

I look at drug related crimes like attempted murder charges. While you did not directly cause a person's death, the potential harm is what your being punnished for.

ya know the crackheads could, oh I dunno, quit being crackheads...

Seriously though, personal responsibility needs to be a top priority here. Charge the crackhead for his time in prison. Make him pay it back, and I don't necessarily financially. Same with anyone that gets put in prison. I'm not sure why chain gangs went out of style (I'm sure though that prisoner abuse had something to do with it) but it seems to me that there is a ton of physical labor that these non-violent prisoners could be doing to better society while incarcerated.

road repair, roadway cleaning, building gov't buildings, working for habitat for humanity, etc. heck, I'd even be willing to give them a break on their jail time if they are productive and stay clean.

From what I understand the main reason that chain gangs went out of style as the result charges of inmate abuse, and the liberals crying that it is cruel and unusual punnishment. The thing is though, that in places that they still use them for road cleanup (grass, brush, rogue trees, etc...), litter pickup, hell some places use them to assist in fighting forest fire/brush fire situations that are out of control, they have no shortage of inmates that want to do this. It gives them a chance to get out and a change of pace. I know of inmates that beg to be able to mop floors and clean around jails, just for something to do.

I'm all for inmate labor if it doesn't hurt private businesses. There were situations where wardons were underbidding contractors, because they're labor costs for the same project was so much less and sometimes it was a scam to get the contractor to bribe the wardon to back out of their bid.

Now your just being silly eddo, why would we ever hold them responsible for their own actions?

While we are at it let's consider that most homeless people choose to live the way they do or they have mental issues. While I feel the existing system should take better care of the mental problems of our people, I must first ask where the families of these people are and why they don't seem to care about what is happening to their loved one.

Personally, I'd rather take my chances on one robbing things from me than getting robbed by them in my paycheck every week to house and feed them.
