In this modern age it has come to the attention of the Vatican that we are all committing more sins then previously thought.

So to add to the 7 deadly sins, the Vatican has revised that list to include:

  • [ ]pollution
    [ ]mind-damaging drugs
    [ ]genetic experiments
[ ]The rich getting richer while the poor get poorer

Vatican official lists new sins: drugs, pollution, DNA manipulation

Associated Press

Published on: 03/10/08

VATICAN CITY — In olden days, the deadly sins included lust, gluttony and greed. Now, the Catholic Church says pollution, mind-damaging drugs and genetic experiments are on its updated thou-shalt-not list.

Also receiving fresh attention by the Vatican was social injustice, along the lines of the age-old maxim: "The rich get richer while the poor get poorer."• More Nation/World news

In the Vatican's latest update on how God's law is being violated in today's world, Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, was asked by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano what, in his opinion, are the "new sins."

He cited "violations of the basic rights of human nature" through genetic manipulation, drugs that "weaken the mind and cloud intelligence," and the imbalance between the rich and the poor.

"If yesterday sin had a rather individualistic dimension, today it has a weight, a resonance, that's especially social, rather than individual," said Girotti, whose office deals with matters of conscience and grants absolution.

I stole the poll from the site, but wanted to get a more, "personal" feel of the members here.

Also, what do you think of these new, "sins" anyway?

Are there other, modern, issues that should be added?

Do you believe that any of these don't belong?

The way CNN (or maybe it was BBC) phrased it, it was "accruing excessive wealth". What do you call "excessive wealth"? Anything more than it takes to pay the bills and feed the family? If you make more than that, do you give the rest to the church so they can pass it out or build more churches?

No, you give it to GOD, he always needs more money. Miracles don't come cheap.

The churches are God's bankers. He tells them (the churches) what to do and they cash the check and pay the bill.;)

I have a question about God... It seems that he's been talking alot lately... talking to TONS of self righteous conservatives. Guiding them and what have you... my question is, why doesn't God talk to me? Why doesn't he talk to the people who... shall we say... stray from God's word the most... I mean, wouldn't it just make more sense, if you were God, to focus on the people who need your help the most and talk with them? I mean, if God like loves us and all, why does one have to be self righteous to be able to hear him?

I think Catholic priests molesting young boys and the Vatican covering it up should be at the top of the list..

I believe those already are sins.

We're all sinners. Some just sin more and commit more types of sins, than others.

Very true... I'd go with pollution.. I don't see genetic manipulation itself as a "sin".. All cells start out as undifferentiated stem cells.. Being a smoker, and an idiot, I'd like to be able to culture me up a new pair of lungs.. :D

Pull some cells from my femur.. be my guest.. However, I could see it getting full out of hand.. But what will be, will be. Not a big fan of cloning, or designer babies and the like.. just growing spare parts basically.. Hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, etc.. I think lifespans could take a huge leap..

What if they are ever able to "shut off" aging? Crazy stuff.. Keep the brain/spinal cord alive.. live forever. Who knows?

I'd be willing to be cryogenically frozen on the chance I could wake up in a thousand years..

I picked genetic manipulation. I guess I voted, from the view of the Church. Kind of like suicide, which is described as the ultimate sin, genetic manipulation is kind of like playing God.

As far as pollution, I don't think it should be on the list. When God created, the Earth, the animals, the plants and then man, he said this was created for man, to do with as they want. Kind of like a kid that breaks his toy that you gave him, he just won't have a toy that works right anymore.

Makes sense.. Also, the Sun will eventually burn all it's fuel. It is a fact.. the Earth will cease to exist.. All good things come to an end. Earthlings will eventually need to leave the "nest" if they are to survive.

The amazing thing.. we have the capability to do so.. Is that Gods plan? Find a new nest? The universe is a big place. I find it nearly impossible that we would be the only planet with life. The problem is, it would take more than a year traveling the speed of light, which is like 186,000 miles per second, to get to the nearest star in our own galaxy.. mind boggling. It's like seeing back in time.. the light we see from Proxima Centauri (Alpha Centauri C), the nearest star to us, started over a year ago.

Plus, not all stars are created equal.. stars like our Sun are not the norm.. Crazy to think about..

Living forever sounds great. But then we'd better stop having children altogether. Otherwise this would be a very crowded planet. Life could get pretty boring, too.

Most likely would be something like that.. But I'm sure people would still die, unless we build titanium bodies. :D

I'd love to wake up in thousand years just for the experience... ;)

I just checked that.. Alpha Cenautri is over 4 light years actually.. Crazy. Takes it's light 4+ years to get here..

The only way I'd want to live forever, is if I also wouldn't age. Otherwise, I don't want to live past 75.

You don't have to be self-righteous to hear Him, but you do have to be listening for Him. I would say that generally, those that "stray from God's word the most" aren't doing a good job of listening for Him.

Either that, or we are smart enough to not make such claims as having "GODS WORD" personally spoken to us to cover up our own personal moral beliefs.

I thought everybody talked to God.

Megadeth - Peace Sells

Title: Peace Sells

What do you mean, "I don't believe in God"?

I talk to him every day.

What do you mean, "I don't support your system"?

I go to court when I have to.

What do you mean, "I can't get to work on time"?

I got nothing better to do

And, what do you mean, "I don't pay my bills"?

Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?

[Chorus:]

If there's a new way,

I'll be the first in line.

But, it better work this time.

What do you mean, "I hurt your feelings"?

I didn't know you had any feelings.

What do you mean, "I ain't kind"?

I'm just not your kind.

What do you mean, "I couldn't be president, of the United States of America"?

Tell me something, it's still "We the people", right?

[Chorus: (repeat)]

If there's a new way

I'll be the first in line,

But, it better work this time.

Can you put a price on peace?

Peace,

Peace sells...,

Peace,

Peace sells...,

Peace sells...,but who's buying?

Peace sells...,but who's buying?

Peace sells...,but who's buying?

Peace sells...,but who's buying?

[n+1 times more]

No, peace sells...

No, that would make you a liar.

.

.

well then, apparently it makes you ignorant.

God doesn't audibly speak to me- but through situations, through people, through the Bible- He most definitely speaks to me.

But I have to listen and look for it. If you aren't looking for it, you aren't going to see it.

No, the fundamental values you learned in life speaks to you and guides your path in life. God is merely the scapegoat.

I agree with this. Even though, I am now, somewhat a Catholic (I don't agree with all the dogma, but affiliate this way) I grew up in a lapse Catholic environment.

My mother was raised Catholic, and up until about the time my sister went to her first communion, we pretty much were Catholic. My father was a Protestant.

Due to some reasons, that I can't get into for personal reasons, and the fact that, when I was 5, my father died on the job, while my mother was 6 months pregnant with my brother, we no longer followed the Church while I was raised (my mother kind of lost her faith}.

I rejoined the Church as a 29 year old adult on my own choice even though I don't agree with all of the views of the Church.

My children are not affiliated with any denomination nor have they been baptised. My ex and I decided to leave this decision up to them.

I do however believe that when you do good, God tells you so in the fact that you feel good about yourself. He doesn't need to verbally speek to you for you to know you are doing what God would want.

Not trying to sound corny, but like in Star Wars and the force, you know in your feelings if you are doing right by God. People call a concience, but I think it's God's guidance.
