snafu Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Dr. Seuss created this story in 1954. Do you think he was in tune of the irony that this story would parallel? If you don't know, the story is about an elephant that hears a yell from a speck of dust. He finds out the speck is an entire plant of people and so he decides to protect it. The Who's ask Horton (who, though he cannot see them, is able to hear them quite well) to protect them from harm, to which Horton happily obliges, proclaiming throughout the book that "a person's a person, no matter how small". Now in our day and age this can be a profound statement. Pro-life activists proclaim and embrace this statement that yes a person is a person no matter how small. On the other hand... the beginning focused on the major of this small community floating in the abyss on this speck as the proud father of 99 kids one is a boy. He only has seconds to spend on each kid a day. Now wouldn't that send a message too? I mean talk about neglect. No wonder Jo Jo walked around all gloomy all the time. I can only imagine what the other kids were thinking. Shouldn't there have been a protest about that? Or about over population? But I think Dr. Seuss was really only getting at is that we are all just a speck of dust in a vast vast galaxy. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" Penn & Teller NEVER FORGOTTEN
wez Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I agree.. Dr. Suess was a genius.. Green eggs and ham.. The lesson of resistance.. Great books. All of them. Matter of fact, if I remember right, didn't he sit dejected in the rain at the end eating his own crap? Quote
Feckless Wench Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I love Dr Seuss books, as did my kids when they were younger. Not sure who enjoyed them more, me reading them or them listening...LOL! The speck of dust theory seems to pop up in a lot of childrens literature, it's good to make them think. Quote Dementia is just a state of mind.
hugo Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I always read Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" to my child. Quote The power to do good is also the power to do harm. - Milton Friedman "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison
Feckless Wench Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I never envisaged you as having kids hugo? Quote Dementia is just a state of mind.
wez Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 But I think Dr. Seuss was really only getting at is that we are all just a speck of dust in a vast vast galaxy. Even more mind bending is the fact that our galaxy is but a mere speck of dust in a vast, vast universe.. Could our universe be a mere speck of dust in a vast, vast, (word not invented yet)? I have my homepage set here.. Astronomy Picture of the Day There's a new pic everyday.. I love astronomy.. The archives have some unreal pics. Might have to start up an astronomy thread and post some pics.. Quote
hugo Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I never envisaged you as having kids hugo? Just one. Unlike some people who have multiple kids and marriages I only make the same mistake once. wez Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Just one. Unlike some people who have multiple kids and marriages I only make the same mistake once. Fortunately, I have neither and learn from the mistakes of others.. Quote
Feckless Wench Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Just one. Unlike some people who have multiple kids and marriages I only make the same mistake once. LMAO, I used the 'tried it once and didn't like it....then try it again just to make sure' They're not so bad....when they're asleep. Quote Dementia is just a state of mind.
DaMan Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 LMAO, I used the 'tried it once and didn't like it....then try it again just to make sure' They're not so bad....when they're asleep. That's the same rule I applied. I also live by rule try and try again until you get it right. There is a group of people that believe the Peledians are the intergalactic protectors of the universe and are on the verge of showing themselves to us since we are soon to go through some awakening stage. Pretty interesting if not far fetched stuff. Quote
Feckless Wench Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 That's the same rule I applied. I also live by rule try and try again until you get it right. LOL, but you have to also realise that there are some things you just ain't gonna get right no matter how hard you try I wouldn't change my two....even though they are capable of sending me from calm to ranting maniac in under a nanosecond. How many do you have? Quote Dementia is just a state of mind.
Feckless Wench Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 5, 3 with first wife and 2 with second. Wow! That must cost a fortune, both in time and money. Good for you looking after that many kids. Quote Dementia is just a state of mind.
ImWithStupid Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I remember hearing somthing about Dr. Seuss' story Yertle the Turtle being a metaphore about Hitler and the original artwork had "Yertle" with a Hitler style moustache and uniform. Not sure if it's true or not, but it kind of shocked me. Yertle the Turtle and Wocket in my Pocket were my favorite Dr. Seuss stories when I was a kid. Quote
Ahhlee Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I love Dr. Seuss. His books are absolutely brilliant and have great messages. I read them to my nephew all the time. Along with Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations", of course....( lol @ hugo! ) Quote
