New York farmers say Governor Paterson’s crackdown on foreign farm workers and promotion of domestic labor is backfiring, leaving them with a shortage of hands in the fields that they say will lead to crop losses this harvest season.

 

Farmers, who have for years relied on seasonal labor mostly from Jamaica and Mexico obtained through federal guest-worker contracts, say the governor’s Department of Labor has disrupted their supply chain in an effort to force them to hire less experienced domestic workers from Puerto Rico and other areas.

 

The farmers, predominantly apple growers, say they fear the labor department won’t be able to replace the H-2A foreign workers with enough people who have the skills and who are willing to harvest the fruit all season long. They are predicting that their fruit will rot on the trees this fall.

 

Representatives of the farmers say they will press their concerns at a town hall meeting with Mr. Paterson and Senator Schumer scheduled for tomorrow in Batavia.

As the school year comes to a close, City Council members are asking Congress for help with the increasingly difficult task of finding summer jobs for area teenagers. This week, the council will debate a resolution calling on the federal government to pass legislation that would award $1 billion in grants for summer job programs around the country.

 

New York is considered one of the most difficult places in America to find work as a teenager. A report by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University found that only about a third of New York teens worked last summer, a lower percentage than every state except California and Mississippi, and a far cry from South Dakota, where the more than 70% of teenagers held summer jobs. The city’s teenage unemployment rate rose to 28% in 2006 from 19% in 2000, even as the overall unemployment rate declined during the same period, according to a report by the Community Service Society, an advocacy group.

and ask the Federal Government for $1 Billion to start summer job programs, doing things that don't need to be done, instead of giving them directions to where the jobs are, on the farms.

That's the problem. It started with FDR. Why work when the Federal Government will give you what you need.

 

It has evolved into the whole mentality of entitlement that plagues our country.

I think it probably started, like just after WWII.

 

After WWII America made up 6% of the world population, yet, produced over 1/2 of the worlds products. The industrial boom of the time ensured anyone who wanted a good job,(I.E. an honest days work) would have one. And with all these new jobs came commercialization that said to the sheeple of America.. BUY, BUY, BUY, YOU NEED THIS. But, a bit after the time of FDR, people became cushioned by all the glorious materialism that consumed the nation.. Thus, the Hippy was born. The branch of sheeple that cared about other things then themselves. Like the environment, and the welfare of others and such.. soon the hippy was dosed up with LSD by the government so that their ultimate cause was buried deep within their minds. The hippy became the laughing stock of America. Those hippys that did manage to quit tripping on acid and smoking the marijuana cigarette became Liberals, and aligned themselves with the less bigoted Democratic party. But, by this time, America was so used to the industrial revolution of consuming, that even the liberals fell into the world of need and greed.

 

The definition of "THE GOOD LIFE" was no longer defined by the hard work you did and the family you loved, it was defined by how much you could make by doing the least amount of work possible to acquire all the goods and services that the industrial complex offered.

 

The ever caring liberals made a fatal mistake though, they cared too much, they saw the need to let everyone and anyone have a piece of the American dream.

 

This completely pissed off the conservatives who felt that the American dream was only made for Americans. This created a false patriotism in America. One that was driven by bigotry and hatred, only this was denied by all who were convinced that they were not bigots or haters, just patriotic Americans who loved their country.

 

This however, is nothing but a sham.

 

To digress: When the new world was quote "DISCOVERED" by the Europeans, there were no land boundaries made up. Yes, America had "Injuns" but it also had Aztecs. Their tribal lands stretched from Northern California all the way into what is now Nebraska and parts of Iowa. History likes to forget this fact, as well as another fact about the European explorers. They conquered what is now Mexico and other southern countries, bringing with them, a new language from Spain (Spanish), and a new religion for the Aztec and other cultures (Christianity). If not for the European settlers who forced their way into America with violence, the United States would still belong to the Aztecs. The superior weaponry forced these people into submission of their beliefs and language. And, with France and England and other such countries all fighting for a piece of this "PIE" the lines were drawn. That line is now called the Mexican border. A line the Aztecs were forced to accept. And with that line barrier and no knowledge of northern border cultures, the Mexican was spawned. Makes one wonder what would have happened if that line of greed by the Europeans was never created. I think America would be alot different now then what it has turned out to be.

 

It's almost comical to hear that catch phrase "SEND EM BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM" when the reality is, they are probably already there.

 

Even more comical, is the other catch phrase "THEY TOOK OUR JOBS"

 

I just REALLY can't find it in myself to feel bad about someone losing their high paying job to someone who can make due and provide for their family with less money doing the same job.

 

It makes me question who is happier with life... the guy who works at a cushy desk job, needs an SUV, 3000 square foot home, and 3 square meals a day, or the guy who will work hard to provide his family with a simple meal of beans and rice while living in a trailer house.

 

Having lived my own life on both ends of the spectrum, and seeing the utter depression that comes from those who only lived one end.. the higher paying end, when life hands them a bad card. I truly believe it is the minimum wage or less worker who is happier in general with life.

My whole idea about FDR and the entitlement idea that you don't have to do low paying jobs because the federal government comes from the idea held by many that the roots of our disillusionment can be found in a single election year, 1936. In that year, Franklin Roosevelt pretty much established the modern political constituency, from unions to artists, to senior citizens.

 

Roosevelt's solution was to spend for these groups, so extensively that federal spending that year outpaced state and local spending, for the first time ever in peacetime. The consequence was the Roosevelt landslide of 1936 --but also the modern entitlement trap.

 

This evolved into what we have now, a domestic policy based on frustration, dispair and resentment. On the one hand, you have those with enormous faith in the private sector; on the other, those that expect government to provide them with ever more generous entitlements.

 

Then you have the person who is getting screwed the most, and heard the least. This is the person who still believes in pre FDR values that you get what you deserve or entiltled to what you are willing to work for, nothing more. This is the person who ends up paying for all those who are unwilling to work or the subsidies that are mishandled by government.

It was FDR who rendered the constitution void with his New Deal programs. At least most of FDR's programs required people to work for their government check. It was LBJ's Great Society programs that really encouraged sloth and irresponsibility. What is funny is how the Democrats have completely abandoned labor in favor of diversity. Throughout most of the post Civil War era the Democrats were opposed to immigration because it lowered wages by increasing the supply of laborers.

I know I've done my fair share... It's not fun, but you definitely learn hard work.
