Has anyone ever eaten in a raw food restaurant before?

If so, how was it? And I'm not talking about sushi either. I've been wanting to try one out for a while now. It will be between one of these two restaurants-

Probably the first one, but I'm going to compare reviews first. I have a feeling it's not going to be so delicious, but I'll never know unless I try it. The health and something-different factors are what appeals to me. The tree-hugging, fake-lovey dovey people feeling I get from it and that it will probably taste nasty are the cons.

I answered this at the other place, but I'll answer here too. It's good when done well, but pretty bland. It's a nice appetizer on your way to get a steak :p Plus...everything is cold. I'm frozen all the time, so this doesn't appeal to me much as a way of life.

No I,ve never eaten raw flesh in a restaurant. But I have eaten roll mop herrings. Do you get those in the states? Its just a raw fillet of fish in vinegar. They are delicious.

Also while in Amsterdam, I ate raw minced steak in a bun. Its a dutch thing. It sounds revolting, but its quite nice.

Do you recommend anything in particular that you remember ordering that was good?

Me, too on both counts.

Is that anything like sushi?

Hmm, interesting... Is it completely raw? Or 'cooked' in vinegar, wine, lemon juice or anything like that? I've had Mexican dishes with raw meat prepared that way (cooked by the acids in the lemon.) Ceviche, Steak Tartare en zumo de limon, etc. It's pretty good.

Sounds like what we call pickled herring. I like anything pickled.

Wiki to the rescue:

Pickled herring

Pickled herring is a delicacy popular in Europe and has become a basic part of Jewish cuisine. Most cured herring uses a two-step curing process. Initially, herring is cured with salt to extract water. The second stage involves removing the salt and adding flavorings, typically a vinegar, salt, sugar solution to which ingredients like peppercorn, bay leaves and raw onions are added.

Rollmops

The word Rollmops, borrowed from German, refers to a pickled herring fillet rolled (hence the name) into a cylindrical shape around a piece of pickled cucumber or an onion.

Roll Mops are vile! It is extremely popular at Ukrainian get togethers. Yuck. It is snotty, pickled herring (fish) with skin on, wrapped around an onion. It is what I imagine boogers taste like. I don`t recommend them.

I can eat raw carrots, celery or just about any type of vegetable, even potato's. I actually prefer my vegetables raw but I need to put a fire under any meat I eat.

Not sure, I've never eaten sushi. I've seen it at the deli counter, but I'm not paying silly prices for a bit of fish ! Imagine a rectangular fillet of herring. Now roll it up and pin it shut with a tail stick. Now let it sit in vinegar. That's all it is ! It's moist, tastes of vinegar with a fishy after taste. It has an interesting texture too. Possibly because you've never eaten raw fish before.

Yes the steak puree/mince is raw. Its then spread on bread. The Belgians do it too. I've had it there also. Again its interesting in the mouth, as its something not experienced before.

I've also eaten frogs legs in France. They were cooked though, and swimming in garlic. It was funny, I was with my ex. She thought she could speak a little french. She was a vegetarian and ordered something appropriate she thought. What ever it was I ordered looked delicious. Not that I got to taste any of it.

Our orders arrived, She sat there staring at the frogs legs, reminding me that she was a vegetarian, as if I'd forgotten or something.

She ended up eating my dinner - surprise surprise, And I ended up either going hungry, or ordering something else.

I won't mention the butterfly larva, ants eggs, scorpions and the big black winged things that may have been roaches that I've eaten in the Land of Smiles.

I've got one of those big black things pickled in gin in a jar. Do you want to see it ? Tell me how to upload the piccie if so.

Thanks for the menu link, Em, and the heads up about the roll mops-lol. Even the name didn't sound too appetizing...

Yeah you can use a free photo site like photobucket then post the link. Or you can just use the Gallery. If your viewing in dark just click on "Upload to Gallery" on the left hand side. Then find the files on your hard drive and upload them. Next once they are in the gallery right click the photo. Copy and paste the address into a post.

Tada!

Oh and the imaging setting has to be turned on in that thread. It's not in here.

I forgot the roasted grasshoppers, they were just delicious. A sort of cross between potato crisps and chicken.

Well here it is then.

It was a bit smelly by the time I got back from Bangkok, so I popped him straight into a tiny bottle filled with gin.

I'm saving him for Xmas.

You need to dig your thumb nail in right behind its head, then twist it off. Next put its abdomen ( severed neck end) up against your mouth, and squidge in all its insides. If you are really lucky it will be pregnant, and you'll get all those yummy sticky eggs. I haven't had that pleasure yet.

You need the foward slash / in the IMG code on the end. And you need the square looking qoute marks example: [/img]
