In oil-rich Norway, petrol prices most expensive in Europe

OSLO (AFP) - In Norway, many motorists are up in arms over why they have to pay the highest petrol (gasoline) prices in Europe when the country is the world's fifth-largest oil exporter and a recent tax hike has done little to cool tempers.

"It is really strange: we have lots of oil and we're a rich country. Why do we have to pay so much?" asks Per-Arne Skjerpingstad, a 38-year-old hospital porter as he fills up the tank of his Peugeot 307 at an Oslo gas station for 750 kroner (94 euros, 148 dollars).

Diesel costs 14.23 kroner (1.78 euros, 2.82 dollars) a litre (quarter gallon) and 95 unleaded 13.84 kroner, putting it at the top of the European league, EU figures show.

And while many countries are discussing how to soften the blow of skyrocketing oil prices on consumers, Norway on July 1 increased its already heavy tax take by 0.05 kroner per litre on petrol and 0.10 kroner (0.1 euro cent, 0.2 dollar cent) on diesel.

Seriously? These people can't figure out why they have high gas prices even though they have a lot of oil, and the second largest GDP per-capita.

I can think of a few reasons. They have large social programs that are funded by heavy taxes. I'd be willing to bet that having about 30% of their publicly traded companies, including the oil industry, is controlled by the government.

Isn't socialism great.

And who can forget what this Democrat let slip out of her mouth...

You do realize the party they are saying will get all the votes the next election are the progress party don't you?

From Wikipedia: Progress Party (Norway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

The Progress Party (Bokm?l: Fremskrittspartiet, Nynorsk: Framstegspartiet, Norwegian abbreviation: FrP) is a liberal conservative political party in Norway. It was the second largest political party in Norway following the the 2005 parliamentary elections, and is according to a survey made by Norstat for NRK in June 2008 the largest political party in Norway, with 30,8 % supporting the party.

The Progress Party is officially a liberalistic[1] party committed to tax reductions, free market economics and deregulation of the economy, stricter limits on immigration, closer cooperation with NATO, the United States and also Israel in foreign policy, a more controlled state aid to developing countries, social and cultural conservatism, and the decentralization of government.

The definition of what we call a socialist liberal in America is alot different from what they are called in Europe and Australia... learned that a long long time ago.

That's my point. Nearly every other nation in the world is moving from socialism to a free market because socialism doesn't work. Why are people in our country, it happens to be mostly Democrats, but some Repubs, moving toward socialism from the free market economy that made the US the most powerful economy in the world?

Hell, like now for example... I am a Democrat... and it's not because I am a Liberal or believe in socialist programs... it's because I am a more progressive thinker then conservative. Yet, on the other hand, I believe there are some fundamental principals in our society that should NOT be changed or should be reverted, it tends to target and baby too many people, which makes me conservative. What tips the scale for me in the reasoning that I vote Democrat is the religion factor. If the religious right would not have stuck their noses so far up the Republicans asses, I might actually vote Republican again like I voted for Bob Dole years ago.

It WAS AND IS the fault of the socialist for the high price of fuel in Norway, but that aside, Norway has some perks we could only wish to have... Hell, if I ever go to prison, let me do my time in Norway.

Liberal conservative is the way to go really. It's too bad we don't have that type of party in America... and if we did, that is absolutely where I would stand.

We do..It is the Libertarian Party. The classical liberal (e.g. Jefferson, Mill, Madison) feared government and seeked to expand individual liberty. In much of the rest of the world liberal retains its original meaning in the United States socialists stole the liberal label.

Let me rephrase that then.... "I WISH WE HAD A PARTY LIKE THAT IN AMERICA THAT ACTUALLY HAD ANY INFLUENCE"

Sadly, we have gone far down the socialist path. Goldwater was the last classical liberal who got a major party nomination. The resulting election was a triumph for socialism. All we can do at this point is keep the values of our founding fathers alive until Americans wake up. It will take some huge crisis.
