These are our friends?

Saudi Clerical Police Outlaw Sale of Cats, Dogs - September 11, 2006 - The New York Sun

Saudi Arabia's religious police, tasked with chiding women to cover themselves and ensuring men attend prayers, are turning to cats and dogs. The police have issued a decree banning the sale of the pets, seen as a sign of Western influence.

Some conservatives have decried the trend as a Western influence, like the fast food, shorts, jeans, and pop music that have become more common in the kingdom, which is ruled by the puritanical Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.

"One bad habit spreading among our youths is the acquisition of dogs and showing them off in the streets and malls," wrote Aleetha al-Jihani Al-Madina newspaper. "There's no doubt that such a matter makes one shudder."

"Then what's the point of dragging a dog behind you?" he added. "This is blind emulation of the infidels."

Who said they were our friends? They are our enemy that has us by the balls. We tolerate them because we want their oil and they want to sell it to us.

Bush Visits Saudi Arabia as U.S. Plans Sale of 900 Missiles to Kingdom

The Bush administration has announced plans to sell Saudi Arabia around $120 million in sophisticated bombs. The sale would come as part of the White House’s $20 billion military aid package to its Gulf allies. The announcement came as President Bush began a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia for meetings with Saudi King Abdullah.

Seems rather idiotic to sell weapons to our enemies....

But then again.. what's new... this is 15 months after Saddam murdered the people who we had stick up for 20 years later.

The federal government has for 30 years and continues to force us to befriend the Sudis. With them continuing to prevent us from harvesting our own oil reserves, we have no choice.

The future of our economic and stratigic survival depends on it if we won't drill our own oil, promote nuclear, hydoroeleictic, wind, solar, shale oil, and coal to oil prospects, we have no choice to kiss the ass of Saudi Arabia.

In contrast, what most don't see is that Russia is making a strategic and economic play on us. They not only have their own vast reserves (about the same as us), but have planted a flag in the arctic to claim much of what's there, and sured up deals for supplies from Iran and other countries that are US unfriendly like Libya.

It's only time before they make a move on supplies from Venezuala, Nigeria, Angola and Iraq, once we leave.

I hope I'm wrong but I think there are plans by Russia to bring us to our knees, like we did to them. Their country is vastly controlled by people from the former KGB who, I doubt have forgotten losing the cold war. The problem is that the federal government keeps playing into this scenerio, with no sign of realizing what's going on.

I think RO said that was plan 9 from outer space..

Right... and what would stop them from selling a nuke to someone? They get paid for what they would prolly like to do themselves.. I think I liked the cold war better.. Stinkin' Reagan.

Dog hatred is a moslem thing. I think it probably says something about it in the koran.

Many years ago I was walking with my lady friend of the time and my dog along the promenade. A middle eastern looking guy approached us and my dog was straining on the lead trying to get close enough to the guy to say hello.

The guys reaction was amazing. He actually was afraid. His eyes widened and became fixed on my dog. His hands and arms were outstreched trying to ward off this threat as he saw it.

We were chatting along with him, and each time the dog tried to get some attention, the guy started doing it all again. And again I pulled the dog back to a distance the guy was comfortable with.

At the time I thought it was probably because dogs in his country spread rabies sometimes. But there is more to it. Its a religious thing I now know.

A lot of Turks (Muslim) are starting to get dogs as house pets. When you talk with some of the older folks, they don't believe in having a dog inside - they believe that if there's a dog in the building, angels won't come to visit and listen to their prayers. I don't know if it's written somewhere or if it's just a cultural thing (like the boogie man).

In my neighborhood (which definitely ain't the slums - a pair of flats across the street are for sale for the equivalent of over $200K), there are packs of feral dogs wandering around at night.:(

Much like you should tolerate the Chinese because you want a free trade agreement with them, right? :)

No. That's why we need Congress to get off their asses and allow for us to be more energy independant so we aren't locked into this relationship with another oppressive government. Unfortunately the difference is, if we didn't get our cheap stuff from China, we'd be OK. We, like all other nations, at this point need oil.

I was being facetious to Snafu.

However, I mentioned photovoltaics before and even though China is a horrible oppressor and polluter and everything else you despise, they're also a leading researcher and producer of alternate energy technology.

Just a thought....
