I saw today that Karr's request to wear street clothes in the court room was denied.

They also stated that when he was on the long flight home he boarded the plane in a nice shirt and tie but once on the plane changed into something more comfortable, then before they landed, he changed back into his dress shirt and tie.

Some states however are finally getting with it and introducing legislature that is actually passing which dictates life imprisonment and even DEATH for first time offenders of raping a minor child under the age of 13. Twenty some odd years after states like Michigan introduced laws that drew mandatory minimum LIFE sentences for possession of a kilo or more of cocaine. Didn't help Pauly Klass any. Her killer had already been released after abducting and raping a little girl whom looked strikingly similar to her.

Yeah I have a neighbor here in this itty bitty town who is a registered sex offender. Sad part is I see him with his granddaughters alone there alot!!! There is no doubt in my mind that a person who commits crimes against other people, be they sexual in nature or not, needs to be locked up. I am particularly happy to see people who hurt children rot in prison, however, when it comes to registering as a sex offender there is a problem.

 

I have no problem with a communities right to know who lives among them, however, like so many other good intentioned programs, this is yet another one being abused, mismanaged, and screwed up.

I heard of a story (ill try and find the link to it) that blew me away. A high school teacher in, I think Maine, was having a consensual sexual affair with a student that was over 18 years of age. In Maine it is illegal for a public school teacher to have sex with a student, despite the age. Last I heard he was in jail awaiting trial and if convicted, would be a registered sex offender.

 

I have also heard many cases brought up by the ACLU in which people over the age of 18 had unwittingly had sex with a minor. Forced to wear the label of sex offender despite their complete lack of knowledge that they were at the time committing a crime.

I was in court (I worked for the police department at the time) one time and a defendant complained he didn't know what he had done was against the law...the judge said "ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it". I can't speak for other states but if I remember correctly in Texas it was an age bracket like you mention. In the scenario you mention, the 18 year old would not have been quilty of rape.

In some states, yes, he would have. An adult having sex with a minor is statitory rape and still requires that the offender register on the Sex Offender Registry. How many people who look at that site are actually going to take the time to look up what law they broke and find it was statitory? Not many.
