wez Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 College presidents seek drinking age debate - Life - MSNBC.com I think if someone is a legal adult, can go to war, sign contracts, and be held financially accountable, they should have the right to get drunk and sleep in a gutter without being labeled a "criminal".. What do ya think? Quote
ImWithStupid Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 This is the same reason it went back to 18 during Vietnam. I personally think they should lower the drinking age to 16 and the driving age to 18. That way they get some of their dumb ass drinking issues out before being able to drive legally. Quote

Guest sheik-yerbouti Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 In the UK 24 hours per day pub opening was the norm up until WW1. Then because they needed max output in the factories, opening times were restricted. Its gone full circle again now to 24 hours a day opening, but only if the publican wants too. You'll find somewhere in every town I guess. Its been that way for a few years now. It does not seem to have made the difference people thought. The problem is affording to go out drinking. Every year the chancellor ups the price of booze and cigarettes through taxation. A pint of lager in my local is ?2.70 [ $5.40] I dont smoke anymore but I think cigarettes are about ?4.5 [$9]. 75% of the price is tax. Its the same with petrol [gas] The pub trade is getting really quiet in my town except for weekends. Most folks drink at home with supermarket beer, at supermarket prices. Quote

What do ya think? They should leave it as is. Let the little bastards get ingenious and creative like we did to break those pesky laws. Making it easy takes all the fun out of it. Now that I can legally and easily drink all that I want, I don't. It's no fun, I don't feel cool anymore. Who am I defying???! Seriously, I think those college presidents are being lazy, enabling and probably have ulterior motives. Quote

Seriously, I think those college presidents are being lazy, enabling and probably have ulterior motives. That is true.. pretty much lost its luster for me by 18 anyways.. What do you think their ulterior motives may be? Maybe they have problems with the younger students drinking with the 21 year old students and are tired of cops combing their campus of legal adults and treating some as criminals while some are just fine. I do think college campuses would be better off with the law at 18.. And really, it should be. IMO.. It seems to be quite a problem at many colleges. Quote
emkay64 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Sounds strange. We had pubs on our campus. If they allow it, the college can make some safety concessions for the students. Quote

I think it would make things much easier for them. They are adults, on their own. Most of our campuses ban alcohol.. and all college towns are full of bars. Quote

Chi Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 What do you think their ulterior motives may be? Not sure, I would have to study and look into this a bit more. But as it has to do with a lot of things, it probably has to do with money. Especially with the current economy. I'm thinking, why would the presidents of colleges care about their students drinking and getting in trouble? Also, why would they care to do them a favor by trying to get the legal age decreased?.... Think about it, most young adults in college who drink and party are not some of the best students. Those students are mainly there to party, sleep around and finally gain their independence from their parents. Yes, there are lots of exceptions. But most students who really are in college to study and take things seriously don't party as hard and are more responsible. Thus, they are more likely to follow the rules and laws. So what age do most young adults enter into college- between the ages of 17 and 18, right? (Hmm, what a coinkie dink that 18 is the proposed age.) So what would college presidents gain if their students screwed off, let their studies lag and could drink & party more freely? Repeat customers! Instead of the average 4-year college tuitions, they can collect for a few extra years. They can also risk that their students drop out and focus more on their partying, but maybe they're just willing to take that risk:) But, I don't know. That's just a theory. It just makes me suspicious, that they would care all of a sudden and why. Their reasons don't sound convincing to me. According to many studies since the drinking age has been increased drunk driving incidents have dropped.-"Over the past 20 years, alcohol-related fatal crash rates have decreased by 60 percent for drivers ages 16 to 17 years and 55 percent for drivers ages 18 to 20 years, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)." from the CDC among many others. Also, "Young men ages 18 to 20 (under the legal drinking age) reported driving while impaired more frequently than any other age group (Shults et al. 2002, Quinlan et al. 2005)." Doesn't sound like a very bright idea. Quote
ImWithStupid Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I'm inclined to think that it's just a ploy to remove the college from any liability if an underage person overdoses on alcoho,l on campus. . . . Quote
Guest big kitty Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I think we should just drop the whole drinking age thing. If you can pick up the bottle you can drink it. We need more teenage deaths on the roadways and it may help lower the life expectancy back to a normal level saving us money on social security to all those old people that live forever. On the serious side to answer the question. It has been my experience that young people, and at my age 18 is young people, the 18 year old is not capible of making good adult desisions. In Nebraska, you can't even sign a legally binding contract until you are 19. So I guess I am for the age to stay at 21. Just a side note, there has been a rumor that interest groups have been pressuring the government to raise the drinking age once again. The rumor I heard was that they wanted to make the drinking age 25. I have not seen anything in writing on this yet but I wounder if it is a true rumor. To our M.A.D.D advocates - is it true you want to raise the drinking age again? Quote
