Rat meat in demand in Cambodia as inflation bites

Wed Aug 27, 2:44 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday.

With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel (69 pence) from 1,200 riel last year.

Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.

Officials said rats were fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them.

"Many children are happy making some money from selling the animals to the markets, but they keep some for their family," Ly Marong, an agriculture official, said by telephone from the Koh Thom district on the border with Vietnam.

"Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand from Vietnamese living on the border with us."

He estimated that Cambodia supplied more than a tonne of live rats a day to Vietnam.

Rats are also eaten widely in Thailand, while a state government in eastern India this month encouraged its people to eat.

They are fighting in India for food, I wonder if I can invest in bat, bugs or worms there.

Gotta love ethanol.

.

Farmers can get better prices for crops such as rape and other oil bearing cerials. So less food crops are being grown. The ongoing problem is that less food is being grown, and hence made available. The outcome, is higher food prices. Most affected of course are the poor.

The oil bearing crops are wanted for cheaper fuel.

I'm not buying... I don't think they use rats for fuel. I think the necessaties of life are more expensive because my money is worth less.

Why did houses all the sudden get more expensive for 10 or 12 years worldwide til almost everyone borrowed as much as they possibly could and the rug was pulled out from under them? Weren't using them for fuel.

Now it's the commodity bubble.. enjoy. Buy a steak on a 10 year payment plan..

Then there's this... Whilst growing up, my small town had 3 quality grocery stores, all locally owned. Now 25 years later we have 1, not locally owned. We had no fast food joints cept a Dairy Queen and several small unique food joints, all locally owned.. now we have McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Johns, Pizza hut, and Subway.. not locally owned. Our once bustling, thriving downtown full of locally owned shops is now a ghost town full of empty buildings. All the towns money leaves the town never to be seen again. The story of every town USA..

Before you get your panties in a bunch, you may want to recheck that. Many of those chains are franchised and individual restaurants are locally owned. Not to mention that the money paid to the employees to work there is absolutely local, unless people come in from out of state to flip your burgers...

I'm trusted by more women.

Other then in the pensions and retirement accounts of the people who live there. Investments in large successful companies are what people are able to retire on.

I've never tried rat meat but nothings wrong with it. As long as it's farmed or kept clean. Meat is meat. I'll serve it to my family to stay alive.

A guy/gals comment at youtube.. smart he/she

The Wall Street Crash was a manually created pre-meditated event, in order to purposefully collapse share prices, so that certain individuals (who created the over-speculation in the first place) could then buy up companies on the cheap.

These individuals also wanted a perception of vulnerability to be created in the financial system, in order to justify the creation of a private and constitutionally illegal Entity called the Federal Reserve, allowing them to take permanent control of America. ~ Zebadie69

There isn't anything to "sell". The funds have accrued so much wealth and the money is portioned off.

Huh? Where's the money come from? By selling, that's how.. Mutual funds are baskets of stocks.. some more conservative with a mix of stocks and bonds, some with all bonds. Some hold real estate, some hold gold and other precious metals etc.. stewards of these don't have their value in cash. They can and do lose value. Specially when everyone is gonna wanna cash out to retire and move into mostly bonds and other more conservative investments. You always need a bigger sucker willing to pay more for a share in order to make money. Eventually the biggest suckers will be standing there holding the bag with no one to sell em to cept the "movers and shakers" for pennies on the dollar..

That vid was wrong.. share prices didn't reach the level they were before the crash til the early 50's.. not the mid 30's.. a quarter century to recover.. And only because of a war putting people to work.

If you really like Ron Paul's stance, the closest choice you have now is Bob Barr.

That person is a dumbass the Federal Reserve system was created a generation before the depression. In fact, the Federal Reserve system caused the depression.

Whoever made the vid is a dumbass.. the person who made that comment did not say the depression lead to the creation of the reserve, they said the depression was used to justify the creation.. read it again..
