Anna Perenna Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Actually, about 33% consider themselves conservative, 18% liberal with the rest/majority somewhere in the middle. That's odd, because I searched on google and the only person with any kind of confident answer came up with: 40% liberal 20% moderate 40% Conservative Where did you get your stats from? Anna Perenna Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 How convenient. My google search: percentage people in usa liberal conservative - Google Search "percentage of people in the usa liberal conservative" Plus the CNN poll which puts Obama at 46% and McCain at 45% When I said "think liberally" I was using the term broadly to include "votes democrat" Quote _______________________________________________________ I don't know how to put this, but ... Just wondering. In the US there is a big difference between someone who is votes Republican or Democrat and who considers themselves conservative or liberal. Voting Democrat doesn't mean you are liberal. You could very well be centrist and lean left or are a one issue voter, i.e. abortion, anti-gun, etc... These are generalizations because unfortunately we have become a two party nation. I consider myself a fiscal conservative, but social centrist and often vote Democarat, but am registered Republican. The site I was on and have been trying to find, was how the population views themselves not their party affiliation. Quote

Well, assuming you actually got to the site and your not just making stuff up as Anna alludes to, you had to get there somewhere. I have most of the statistic sites I use all on favorite tabs. If what you used was just a random site you don't know anything about, well I would not have used it until I was sure they were not offering a biased study anyway. Quote

I keep ones I go to often bookmarked like the OnTheIssues one, Peter G. Peterson, FactCheck.org and such, but a site that divided the population by ideology isn't one I had saved. I guess I should find a good one, with credible statistics though. I need to find the stats, but I still believe that the majority of the population is centrist, taken all things into perspective. You know, I don't actually have a problem with people thinking conservatively (Hugo is a good example). I have a problem with conservatives whose main imperative is to badmouth liberals ad nauseum - that's all. Social, economic, education, etc... Depending on the study you want to give the most strength too the numbers for 'declared' Americans is in the ballpark of what Anna posted, I believe where your comming from is how the actual elections turn out reguardless of party numbers. Many people may join one party or another for many reasons to even include what party their family belongs to but when it coms time to actually vote, their leanings many times are more to the center. McCain is the most liberal Republican I have ever known, he has been involved in many cooperative measures with liberals over the years (and was my main reason I was not thrilled to have him represent me) and he beat out more hard line conservative people. The primary elections are usually dominated by those more hardlined or radical in the party, this is why Obama did so well against Hillary. The general elections tend to have more people involved and the true centered feelings start to come out and show. That is why the polls are changing and Obama is waffling on his possitions based on these same polls. If your campaign is all about the polls, you can be very frustrated when the more radical views start to wane and the true feelings start showing up as the general election starts to get closer. I have watched this process time and time again. Quote

That is why we are having so many 50/50 split races... people are just voting party lines when neither candidate really STIRS them... Quote

You always seem like a respectful, laid back kinda guy to me. Quote
timesjoke Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I agree with what Chi said about us all being different. Consider how boring the world would be if we were all the same? All believed the same things. All looked the same. All liked the same foods and the same music, if we were exactly the same as everyone else we would all either die of boredom or kill each other off because as they say, opposites attract, the same will only piss us off. This is the main reason me and IWS butt heads every now and then, we are closer to being alike than either one of us would ever admit in front of the other so out strong personalities must collide every now and then. I actually like IWS, but I do find myself trying to kick him into higher potential every now and then Quote
