I'm impressed you acknowledge this. There were many atheist popes during the dark ages. They were the ones that caused all the ruckus under the banner of God. It is pretty startling. They openly denied the existence of God then proceeded to slaughter His actual followers in His name. Kind of fulfills the prophecy Jesus warned us about: There will be those who will kill you and claim to do it in my name but they know neither Me nor the Father.
