'Aye' And Mighty: Bloomberg's Wish Is Granted

City Council Passes Vote To Extend Term Limits, Allowing Mayor To Run Again

Council Approves Proposal By Majority Vote, 29-22

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Mayor Michael Bloomberg's bid to run for a third term got the all-clear Thursday when the City Council voted to allow term limits to be extended from 8 to 12 years.

Emotional and often outspoken council members voted 29-22 in favor of the extension that now allows officeholders three consecutive four-year terms. About two-thirds of the City Council is currently in their second term.

In a statement released by Bloomberg shortly after the decision was announced, he said he was pleased with the council's vote.

"Today, the majority of the City Council decided to give the people of New York a fuller choice in the November, 2009 election. I believe that was the right choice, and I want to thank Speaker Quinn for her leadership.

"Those of us who work on both sides of City Hall must now move forward with the important decisions that face us, particularly finding ways to soften the fallout from the economic downturn and balancing our budget as revenues decline. We have a lot of work to do together to get New York through these tough times."

The council debate began around 2:30 with passionate views on both sides. Council Speaker Christine Quinn got the debate rolling, echoing Bloomberg's argument that the Wall Street meltdown needed experienced hands like himself and the other elected officials.

"In challenging times like this, the voters should have the choice of keeping the current leadership, the current mayor, the current City Council," she said.

But opponents argued the decision should be up to the people, not the officials who would also be affected by a term limit extension.

"If you do this, you are undermining the very people who voted for you," Councilman Charles Barron argued. "Even though the mayor will win today, he is the big loser, because he lost democracy, he lost the favor of the people."

Others argued that those who voted in favor did so to enable themselves the ability to stay on the council again too.

"This had nothing to do with Bloomberg, this had nothing to do with individual council members, this had to do with what's good for the city," former Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. told CBS 2.

When 9/11 happened in the last year of Giuliani's second term, there was discussion of suspending the two term limit, to allow him to continue the fantastic work he was doing after the attack.

Michael Bloomberg went ape sh!t about the thought of this because he was running for Mayor. Now that the economy is having problems, Bloomberg has been campaigning for him to be able to stay on for another term.

The term limits for Mayor were decided by a vote of the people, polls show that the population wants them to stay at something like 89% of the people think the voters should decide the issue, but the NY city council by a 29-22 vote overturned a referrendum enacted by popular vote in an election and are allowing Bloomberg to seek a third term.

This is the beginning of the coming "Facism" we are going to see in this country, as times get tough. Politicians are going to take advantage of the situation, take away our rights at an alarming pace, and once their gone, the government won't likely relinquish their control.

Anyone who complains about the Patriot Act better hold onto your a$$ for what's coming with a far left Obama administration and a if, God forbid, there's a Democratic super majority in Congress, with wackos like Pelosi and Reed at the helm.

I think a strong control of Congress and control of the Presidency by either party is bad, as the drunken sailor like spending that the Repubs did after the balance budget act (or whateve it was called) expired, shows what can happen but having a super majority in Congress, there won't be any checks and balances.

You're on... Things be getting ugly down here.

You know, that's the thing.. Control and "power" always needs to escalate no matter what.. always. If I don't know anything else in the world, I know that... Only one way to deal with that..

Think I'll go take my frustrations out on TJ some more.. :D

Its not at all about "the city's best interests" Its about securing very well paid jobs for themselves.

Typical politicians. They already know the people would not vote for it, so they go behind your backs and do it slyly.

They already have way too much power if they can do this without a public referendum
