ImWithStupid Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 No people who pay no taxes at all will get extra money in their welfare checks. Prove me wrong. What Snaf is saying is under Obama's plan, the 40% of Americans who pay nothing at all will get a refundable tax credit. The main point here is the word, "refundable". Usually a tax credit means you can take that off of what you "owe" to the Federal government. When you put the word "refundable" on it, that means that, even if you don't owe one cent in taxes, you get a check back. That's were the "welfare" reference comes in. I can say that I have never, in my life, got more back from the Federal government, more than I've paid in. When I was in High School and working, I got back all I paid, because I didn't earn enough, but never, even with the "stimulus check" given out this year, it was still quite a bit less than I paid in. Giving money back to people who pay nothing is what is known as charity in the private sector, and welfare when it is given by the government. Obviously the Dems and Obama won't call it welfare, but that's what it is. Quote

Second he fails to talk about the plan the Dems have in commitee that would seize the American citezen's PRIVATE 401k accounts and put them in a system like social security. Obama, Dems Seek to End 401(k) Plans By Mark Impomeni Oct 24th 2008 9:00AM Sen. Barack Obama's Democratic allies in Congress are looking into a radical new plan that would fundamentally change the way Americans save for retirement. House Democrats recently heard testimony on the idea and, under a potential Obama administration, would likely move to put it in place. Democrats want to seize the money that workers currently invest in their 401(k) plans and replace the popular retirement savings accounts with a one-size-fits-all government sponsored retirement account. Under the scheme, Americans would be forced to transfer all of their hard earned retirement savings from their 401(k) to the government. The government would contribute $600 a year to fund each account and would pay a rate of return of around three percent in interest. The government would also mandate that each worker contribute 5% of their yearly salary to the accounts. Under current law, workers with 401(k) plans contribute to their retirement accounts and earn interest tax free. The Democrats' plan would end those tax breaks, amounting to as much as a 15% tax hike on each American worker. Obama, Dems Seek to End 401(k) Plans - Political Machine Quote

Actually, he did mention that, on his website: As part of a bipartisan plan that would be phased in over many years, they will ask those making over $250,000 to contribute a bit more to Social Security to keep it sound. But there are no exact details about the plan, so I don't (as yet) believe the speculation provided in your link. I was focused more on the fact that the article refutes the "people who are already paying no tax" point you and Snafu made. I personally don't agree with either of the proposed tax credits, by the way. They both seem overly complicated and pointless. It's still in comitee at this time and you must not have followed the other links or read the quote by the Dems involved... Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) said recently that Democrats had better ideas for the $80 billion that Americans contribute to their 401(k) plans each year. "We have to start thinking about whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that's not doing what we say it should." Sen. The election is 5 days away. Obama should've disclosed his entire plan but hasn't. McCains is very simple. Everybody gets a $5000 health credit to buy the health care they chose. Obama wants the goverment to control the health care. Every thing about Obama's plans include goverment control. And yes as IWS said out of the 95% percent of the people that are supposed to get a tax releif 40% of them don't pay any taxes at all already. They would recieve a check! Oh by the way Obama has now lowered the $250,000 tax braket down to $200,000. His buddy Biden stated it would be $150,000. Last year (2008) Obama voted to tax everybody that makes $40,000 or more a year. Now you tell me if you can believe him! We saw that in the 40's during the deppression. If McCain is true to his word he will cut taxes and cut goverment spending to compensate for the trillions we owe. He will stimulate our economy with not just these tax cuts but produce jobs by opening up drilling which again will help our economy by not spending 700 billion dollars to foreign oil nations.
