President Bush did the right thing...

Bush pardons 2 former border guards

By DEB RIECHMANN – 11 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President George W. Bush has commuted the prison sentences of two former Border Patrol guards whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's act of clemency on Monday for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean was a victory for Democratic and Republican members of Congress and others who pleaded with the president to pardon the men or at least commute their sentences.

Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs can rest easy now. ;)

...and Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and millions of the people of the United States of America.

I fully agree that this was more of a commutation of sentance case, instead of a pardon case, because down to brass tacks, these guys first failed to report the incident and then did some cover up of it, so they broke the law, but 11 and 12 years in solitary confinement is beyond reason.

The guy not only was a Mexican person illegally entering the country to smuggle drugs, but he also smuggled more than 700 pounds of pot into the US while using the free passes the US Attorney gave him to use while waiting to testify against the Border Agents.

Also adding the Federal Gun charge because they used their lawful duty weapon as a Border Agent, the same as they would use it against a common thug with a gun to force the mandatory 10 years on their sentance was an abomination of the intent of that law.

In conclusion. I don't believe these guys were treated fairly, but since they were dishonest and failed to properly report what happened and didn't do what was right until it became necessary, they shouldn't get a pardon. Commuting the sentance was the right move for President Bush.

I guess that makes them ok to be Treasury Secretary though.:D
