You can't make this stuff up. How dare you if you try!

COVINA, Calif. ? The ex-husband of one of the nine people killed at a Christmas Eve party has been asked by a landlord to pay the dead woman?s rent.

Broadcrest Foothill Apartment Homes claims Alicia Ortiz broke her lease and gave ?insufficient notice to vacate.?

Ortiz and her 17-year-old son were killed by her sister?s disgruntled ex-husband.

The landlord of her Upland apartment informed her former husband, Carlos Ortiz, that he owes $2,821 in rent and penalties.

Says Carlos Ortiz, ?I just don?t understand it.?

The manager of the property, Candyse Wardlow, refused to comment. Messages left at the company?s office were not returned.

Alicia Ortiz, her son Michael and seven others were killed Dec. 24 by a gunman dressed as Santa Claus. He then burned the house and killed himself.

I don't begrudge anyone trying to make a dollar, but this is absolutely absurd. If I were the judge set to decide this case, I'd laugh this landlord right out of court. "Get out!"

How freakin' callous to say the least. Sorry lady, but your tenant didn't know she was going to be murdered and charred to death to give you sufficient notice of it. Secondly, she can't charge the ex, he's the ex. What's wrong with this lady?....

This person better hope that they are not sued for emotional distress for this absurd request.

Unless he signed the lease with her.

Anyway, the apartment was burned and thereby probably uninhabitable. The apartment owners should be sued for inadequate fire protection.;)

True.

The apt. wasn't burned, it was her parents house. She was at their house spending Christmas with her family and was among the people her brother in law murdered.

My thoughts exactly. If he is on the lease then he is likely liable for the rent and penalties.

How selfish and greedy can people possibly be?

I know we're all falling on hard times right now, but damn....do have we have to throw common sense, human decency and a little compassion for our fellow man out the window, too?

I'LL bet that the landlord is a corporation:eek:.

I say things to incite barrages of inflammatories, but the landlord is a property management group (or company).

The AP reports a "landlord", which makes (it, them, he, she, et.al.) sound like a feudal lord in the Dark Ages of Europe subjecting their serfs to the harshest of conditions.

Eddo charges blood, sweat and tears as rent. Also the occassional burrito and fruit pizza when he's in a good mood.

It's the ex-husband. Doubt if he cared much for her anyhow.

Everyone is assuming the late rent and default was caused by her death. The media usually puts a spin on stories to make them more interesting so that people will read/watch. I don't know enough about the circumstances, but it seems possible that she was in default or behind on the rent before the murder. He could be responsible for her debts if he is on the lease or if it was part of the settlement agreement in the divorce. I'm sure there are other circumstances involved that are not disclosed by the story.
