The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police, and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and pressure by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone.

I think we haven't been building our fences fast enough.

I guess the question is it partly America's fault? We are the ones supplying the weapons and demanding the drugs.

This is another prime example that the war on drugs is not working and will only escalate if we don't do something. Either legalize it or be prepared to defend our boarder.

No. I believe stationing federal troops for policing inside the US is a slippery slope and something the founding fathers warned us about and tried to protect us from.

The border should be secure, but as for firearms going south, yes I believe that's happening but only to the low level members. The organized cartel operatives are using military grade weapons smuggled in just as they are to the gangs in the US from Mexico. The guns available to civilians that might be going south aren't fully automatic weapons. You'd have a better chance of getting these guns from Mexico than from the US.

It's just another anti-gun ploy.

Current administration has their head in the sand.

Despite the fact the the city of Phoenix is the second highest in kidnapping in the world, that has happened while she was governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano denies Mexican drug violence has crossed the border yet...

HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY says Mexican violence has NOT spilled across the boarder

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano denied Thursday that the latest drug-fueled violence in Mexico has spilled across the border, even as local officials throughout the country see troubling signs of Mexican gang activity.

The Department of Justice reports that 230 U.S. cities, from Anchorage to Atlanta have a cartel or Mexican gang presence. A February report from the Cato Institute found a "troubling number of incidents" in which Mexico violence was spilling across the border. It also noted increasing violence against U.S. citizens traveling in the southern neighbor.

Federal authorities say more that $14 billion in illegal drugs are smuggled into the U.S. every year through Mexico. And Phoenix, the capital city of Napolitano's home state of Arizona, recorded 370 kidnappings last year, placing it only second to Mexico City worldwide, though it wasn't immediately clear how many of the kidnappings can be traced to Mexican drug activity.

Napolitano acknowledged Thursday that violence in Mexico "has risen to very high levels." But she said that although the U.S. is planning for the potential for violence to move north across the border, it hasn't happened yet.

"Right now it has not (crossed the border). But it is a contingency we have in mind because it could," the former Arizona governor told reporters. "We have contingency plans should violence spread into the United States."

Someone needs to wake the fukk up and do something to secure the border before Mexico collapses and every southern state become huge refugee camps for those who are fleeing the power struggle.

yeah I was watching Geraldo and that's exactly what I thought about the guns too. I threw that in because it was one of his contentions.

I think he dose have a point about the drugs though. We are the buyers and if there wasn't a demand for it then I think there wouldn't be the violence. We need to man the boarder better. Be it military troops or an increase of boarder patrol I think it is a must. Eventually it will spill over and I don't think we should just wait for it to happen. I would even consider sending troops into Mexico to help. That might be a fiasco though. We also need to arm our boarder patrol better and give them more leeway on enforcement. Like the order "shoot to kill" should be allowed.

YES! I live 30 miles from the border and I'm sick to death of the Canadians coming into our country and purchasing our goods with their loonies, sending their best hockey players to our Universities and bombarding us with their awesome weed!

Oh wait...we're talking the other border, huh? Yeah, that's a hell of a mess.

NEVER equal. ALWAYS greater force. Unless all you want is a status quo. Colin Powell had the right idea on that.
