Ahhlee Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 My friend was home visiting this weekend and when he stopped by my business this morning to say good-bye he said, "You were the topic of conversation at coffee this morning." "Coffee" consists of a group of farmers who gather at the local cafe every morning at 6am to talk about rain, if it's going to rain, how we need more rain, how we got too much rain and compare rain fall amounts across their acreage. Once the subject of rain has been thoroughly beaten to death, the topic turns to who is screwing who, who got in a fight at the bar last night or who screwed who resulting in a bar fight. Beings I have no control over the weather and I have not had a spare moment in the last few weeks to screw or fight anybody, I was very curious as to see why my name would be brought up at morning coffee. "Uncle Greg heard you were planning on selling the business and moving out of town. He said, 'That Alicia is a damn hard worker. It'll be a shame to see her go.'," my friend told me. He saw my jaw drop and replied, "Yeah, I know! Quite the compliment, huh?" That is an understatement. Let me give you a bit of background on Uncle Greg: Like me, Uncle Greg comes from tough, Germanic stock. He farms and raises cattle, and like most North Dakotans he works hard to make ends meet. He doesn't take crap from anybody and what he says, goes. John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson.....all could take lessons on being real men from Uncle Greg. The man eats wood chips for breakfast and sh!ts particle board by 9am. When you work with him, you don't mess around, you get the job done, and get it done right the first time. He's both respected and feared in our little community. Uncle Greg doesn't throw around flowery words or compliment anyone.....ever. That's not the way things are done up here. If you get a satisfactory grunt out of him, consider yourself praised. Now, I know that words are cheap and a person can flap their jaws with sugary sentiments all day long, but what really reveals a person's true intentions is their actions. In this case and this case only, I'm willing to make an exception because I know that Uncle Greg's word is honorable and true. For Uncle Greg to call ME a "damn hard worker"...well, I've reached the top. You just can't do any better than that. I've hit the zenith of what I can do in this town and now I feel comfortable in moving on to a new challenge in life. .................................. Have you ever gotten a compliment from someone that really meant something? One that made you stop in your tracks and say, "Now THAT is a compliment!"? Quote
