Ahhlee Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 So today I traveled to the "big city" for a doctor's appointment and decided I would get my passport application taken care of while I was there. I planned ahead and brought my birth certificate and Social Security card along with my driver's license to make sure there would be no identification problems and made my way to the Post Office. I got my application, filled it out, and then waited to be interviewed by the official. He called me in, looked over everything, praised me for having enough foresight to bring my birth certificate, and then said...."Oh, this might be a problem. I see you have gone by another name before (married name). Are you legally permitted to go by your current name?". "Well yes, I had that included in my divorce decree and have a new Social Security card which shows the name I go by now...the name I've been going by for the last 9 years." "I'm sorry ma'am, but you know how bureaucracy goes. Do you have a certified copy of your divorce decree?" "Not with me. I didn't think I would need it beings I had along 3 other forms of identification." "We could send in the application as is, but most likely it will be declined and returned to you until you can provide proof of your divorce and name change. Would you like to try to sneak it by, or wait?" "I guess I'll wait." The guy was nice enough about it and I didn't pitch a fit there in his office, but I was pissed. Seriously...it seems like at least every three years when I'm applying for different things I have to drag out that fukking divorce decree to prove I am who I say I am! That blasted paper is a constant thorn in my side. If my ex were applying for a passport today, he wouldn't have to prove he's no longer married to me. Hell, I bet he hasn't had to touch his copy of the decree since the day he got it! And I swear on all that is Holy, the FIRST person who dares to mention that I could avoid this hassle if I'd never gotten divorced in the first place will get beaten into a bloody, unrecognizable pulp! Grumble Quote
Ahhlee Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 I need the passport to go visit emkay, otherwise I won't be able to get back into the States! Ehhh...she and I will laugh about this when we're get shnockered together. Quote

timesjoke Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Well nobody said being a woman would be all good you know, there must be a few tiny negatives here and there to go with the good things like free dinners and free drinks at the bar, lol. Quote

ImWithStupid Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Wha...? Stop being a butthead. Not being a butthead. You had a choice, by your own explanation, you "chose" to take his name so you wouldn't be "labled" as this or that. It's on you. Accept it, and move on. Just like all the crap that happened to me in my divorce was ultimately based on decisions that I made. Maybe not all were in my control, but I made them. Now you must own it. Quote
timesjoke Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 ^^^I agree with IWS, We all make our choices. I also went through somne tough times with my divorce, credit cards she opend in my name and maxed out without me knowing about them cost me over 100k alone. My only salvation was to not have anything of hard value in my name, she didn't know that of course until her lawyer went looking and even today she will sometimes complain to me about that fact "screwing her over" by her not getting any money out of me for the homes or property that were in my mother's name instead of mine. She did get all the bank accounts and deposit box though and when asked where the money went by the judge she said she blew it on a trip she took because she was stressed out. If it was okay to clean out the cash for just her, then I don't feel bad for having myself protected in that small way. Quote
emkay64 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Awww that blows... I did make that call to deny your passport so you'll be stuck in Canada with meeeeee.......muwahahahaha. If you have an old passport...i think you can do the new one online. Might help you a little with the stupid commute. Oh and way to go on your poor life choices! Geeze sometimes a girl just wants a little sympathy not a "you shoulda" checklist. Honestly..... puts arm around Ali ....I'm totally getting laid! Heehee. Quote

I took my husband's last name because I felt it would be easier for our children to have parents that shared the same last name. Also I loved him. Good God Almighty....am I seriously going to be persecuted by two conservative white God fearing males for attempting to FOLLOW TRADITIONAL FAMILY VALUES?????? The fukking point of this post is that the divorce was a nasty situation for both of us. But while he was able to close that door 9 years ago and keep it closed, I am still forced to reopen it on occasion to validate my identity and that sucks. Cripes! Quote

You don't want to get one of the new passports. They have RFID chips in them and people can steal your information and the Bilderberg Group or the New World Order folks can track you... , Jul. 12, 2009 Chips In Official IDs Raise Privacy Fears As Government Tags Passports, Licenses, Critics Fear Privacy Is 'chipped' Away (AP) Climbing into his Volvo, outfitted with a Matrics antenna and a Motorola reader he'd bought on eBay for $190, Chris Paget cruised the streets of San Francisco with this objective: To read the identity cards of strangers, wirelessly, without ever leaving his car. It took him 20 minutes to strike hacker's gold. Zipping past Fisherman's Wharf, his scanner detected, then downloaded to his laptop, the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians' electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags. Within an hour, he'd "skimmed" the identifiers of four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet. Embedding identity documents _ passports, drivers licenses, and the like _ with RFID chips is a no-brainer to government officials. Increasingly, they are promoting it as a 21st century application of technology that will help speed border crossings, safeguard credentials against counterfeiters, and keep terrorists from sneaking into the country. But Paget's February experiment demonstrated something privacy advocates had feared for years: That RFID, coupled with other technologies, could make people trackable without their knowledge or consent.Chips In Official IDs Raise Privacy Fears - CBS News Quote

timesjoke Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 And I never said anything against you, just agreed with IWS about how "stuff happens" sometimes and we just have to deal with it. I would gladly take your issues though over mine, a couple days of digging up copies of your divorce decree or wondering every week if this is the week my visit is screwed with just because she can. I feel like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs every time I call that woman.........and my youngest is turning 9 this November, many years to go. Can you get a certified copy reduced and laminated to keep in the glovebox? How about changing your name to something truly original? Then when people want you to provide proof, it is reasonable? I might be persuaded to help come up with a few ideas for names if you like......... Quote
