FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A lawyer climbed through a neighbor's bedroom window and stabbed him to death after being told by a family member that the man had molested his 2-year-old daughter, authorities say.

Barry James, 58, was stabbed in the chest nearly a dozen times Monday. The lawyer, Jonathon Edington, 29, was charged with murder and burglary and was released on $1 million bail Wednesday.

Capt. Gary MacNamara said that police had not received a complaint about the child being assaulted before the killing, and "we have no indication it's true or not true."

Edington's attorney, Michael Sherman, said the information came from Edington's wife. "The daughter gave the mother information which was alarming and disturbing. The mom relayed it to her husband. That was the spark," Sherman said.

James' 87-year-old mother discovered his body. When officers went to Edington's home, they found him standing by his kitchen sink with what appeared to be blood on him, and a large kitchen knife next to him on a counter, authorities said

"He's in shock," Edington's attorney said. "This is the most unexpected turn of events one can imagine with this young man's background."

Police had gone to the neighborhood before, when Edington called to complain that he could see James through a window, police said. "Either he was partly clothed or revealed parts of his anatomy that were inappropriate," MacNamara said.

Edington, a graduate of Syracuse University and Fordham University Law School, has been practicing patent law, Sherman said. Police said Edington has no criminal record.

Rita James declined to comment on her son's death.

James served two days behind bars in 2001 on a drunken driving charge, according to the state Correction Department.

"He had some bizarre behavior over the last month," said Darrell Maynard, a neighbor. "He drove his car through his garage, hit the other neighbor's building."

Another time a neighbor found James intoxicated on the street, Maynard said. James shouted obscenities at children, he said.

As for Edington, Maynard said: "Something had to happen that was terrible for this to have occurred." Edington "seemed like a computer geek or something. He was not anybody you would ever feel you were threatened by."

The old bastard deserved it, unfortunately the Father who stood up for his daughter will be punished for defending his family when the law should have protected his daughter to begin with. Its cases like this that if I had the money to be philanthropic, I would pay for his defense.

I think it was justified if it was true he did molest his daughter, which it does sound like it from the neighbor's odd behavior and past occurences. I don't know what the daughter was doing by herself around that pervert, but children esp. that young don't lie and esp. about something like that. They don't even know about stuff like that until much older unless they were exposed to it. I have no sympathy for pedos.

You better be damn sure he did something to the child before you go off like that. I think of my 2 year old grand daughter and she’s just now mimicking the things we say. She could just be parroting what the mother was asking her. And that's a good question as to how this guy found time alone with a two year old. My grandaughter dosn't leave site from any supervision.

Now this guy has to prove that the molestation did happen. That’s gonna be hard. You can’t rely on how he was behaving.

If he did molest her I can easily see why he killed him though.

I think he did exactly what our first reactions would be if we found out something like that happened to one of our kids. It would be hard to live in the same neighborhood as that person while an investigation was being conducted. A person hopes that the man didn't do it, for the little girls' sake, but on the other hand, hope that her father didn't kill an innocent man. It is a sad story all around..no one really wins.

That's the only problem that I have with this. If it is, without a doubt, true, then fine. Let him off on temp. insanity. But how sure could he be?

How verbal can a 2 year old possibly be? What could she have said to make him 100% sure that this weirdo had violated his daughter?

Maybe there was some physical trauma. And then she was questioned about it. I guess well hear about it soon.

Since I posted this, I found that the police had been called on the man that was murdered on multiple occasions for different things. It sounds like he was not running on all cylinders to begin with. It also sounds like the Father who ended up killing him was desperate because he saw law enforcement wasn't doing anything, not too mention the family member the nutcase was living with. He had evidently exposed himself to the neighborhood and caused other disturbances, the news didn't give too many details.

I hope NONE of us have to find out what we would do if we were put in this circumstance.

Police: Girl Not Molested Before Father Stabbed Neighbor

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Fairfield police have concluded that a 2-year-old girl was not molested by the neighbor her outraged father is accused of stabbing to death, police said.

Attorney Jonathon Edington is charged with killing neighbor Barry James on Aug. 28 after his wife told him of the abuse allegation. Edington pleaded not guilty to the charge last week.

Fairfield Police Captain Gary MacNamara said police are confident that the girl was not molested.

They won't say whether they will charge the girl's mother. She told police that the girl told her while they were on vacation that James came to her "in the starry nights."

James' family has been adamant that he was not a child molester and would not have harmed the girl. The family's attorney said the family is considering legal action.

This is a VERY sad case indeed. Other then being a little left of center and exposing himself, this old man didn't do anything.

When I read this story I wondered if the old man was organized enough to molest a 2 year old.
