snafu Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska has the worst highway system in the nation, according to a new report from a California-based research group. Yeah we have a standing joke around here. Up here in Alaska we have two seasons, winter and construction. The Seward highway which runs south from Anchorage to Seward is one of the most dangerous highways with some of the higest death rates in the nation. It runs all the way around the Cook Inlet. The other side of the road is rock that falls on the road all the time and it would be almost impossible to widen it. The ruts in the road are extremely dangerous. They damn near throw you off the road and are treacherous on a motorcycle. So how does your highways stand up? mercury Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 I"m surprised the honor didn't go to Detroit... I always joke that they don't need the "Welcome to Wayne County" signs, the pot holes let you know you've arrived. The other counties aren't a whole lot better, but there is a noticeable difference. I got spoiled by Florida's roads, but Georgia's aren't too bad, other than all the blind curves and hills. Quote
timesjoke Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 I think all the big cities constantly have road construction going on, Jacksonville is one of my regular destinations and I can't remember a time the area around I10 and 95 was not being worked on in the last 20 years. Florida overall has decent roads though, I am pretty happy. When I was stationed in Colorado in the Army, I was impressed at how fast they completed road projects, many were 24 hour a day jobs and I remember one job where they had to lower a road under an existing overpass but the road was very busy all the time. They shut it down Friday afternoon and had it completed Monday morning. Impressive. Quote
snafu Posted December 19, 2009 Author Posted December 19, 2009 Just the streach of road by my house has been under some kind of consturciton for the last five summers. They get one patch done each year and then start over. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" Penn & Teller NEVER FORGOTTEN
