I am happy to annouce, Sprint employees are not allowed to chase shoplifters. So, now all you less than moral people know were to shop. :)

Good idea? Bad idea? Any ideas?

I heard something about this on Todd&Tyler as well. Evidently not only places like Best Buy but other huge electronic stores also have this policy. I guess to avoid the hassle of a lawsuit or bad publicity for wrongly accusing people or something.

Not really sure how I feel about that, I think they SHOULD pursue, but then again, I have been eying this nice 52" flat screen :D

Well it's these stupid lawsuits. I would understand not persuing so the employee didn't get hurt but the thief shouldn't be able to sue. What is this world coming to anyway?

Yes, unfortunately, this is in effect in a LOT of stores. Probably most. What I've been told by loss prevention people that I know is in case the friggin THIEF has the nerve to sue for getting hurt or manhandled in the process. Ridiculous!!! Getting hurt and manhandled would be well deserved!

Also, a lot of times the thieves aren't even prosecuted, just let go and banned from the store....

I had a friend that was working at a liqour store when someone snaged a bottle of booze. He ran after the perp and caught up to him. The guy turned around and planted the bottle right across my buddies head. In that instatnce I could see letting the guy go.. Edited by rem

There are perfectly legal ways to deal with shoplifters, but I think the employer isn't so much afraid of the thief suing(secondary) as they are of the employee not knowing where the boundary of reasonable versus unreasonable force is. If the employee screws up in detaining the alleged shoplifter, gets over zealous or is a nut job, the employer is liable. Employers don't have a lot of control over what employees at local stores do and they probably do want to spend the time and money explaining the law in this area to them.

Still, I think it's kind of silly to not allow and pursuit.

On a completely unrelated note, if you guys could go ahead and forward me your Christmas lists so I can get a jump on those this year...

It is probably an economically sensible policy until the thieves find out about it.

A lot of thieves do know I've been told, that's why they do things certain ways or steal stuff close to the exit doors.

hahahahhahahaha. Yeah....

yeah, by the same loss prevention people. If anything, I helped catch two thieves back in the day when I worked retail. One customer trying to use stolen gift certificates and an employee stealing merchandise (which ironically she had gotten fired at another store by the same company, but managed and had the nerve to get re-hired at another location), giving herself ridiculous discounts and using my employee #!!
