A South Carolina man says his constitutional rights have been violated after he was told by his local government to remove the Bible-themed signs he had posted on his property.

Oscar Moultrie says a Berkeley County, S.C., ordinance that requires residents to obtain government permission before putting up signs on their private property -- other than "for sale," "for rent," political signs, and a few other exceptions -- violates his First Amendment right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Moultrie says he received no complaints about his signs before the county ordered him in March to remove them or pay $25 to get a permit to post them.

In his lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Charleston, S.C., he is asking the court to issue an immediate injunction that bars enforcement of the ordinance and declares it unconstitutional.

"The thing with the ordinance," says John Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute, which is representing Moultrie, "is it allows for political signs, which means that in this particular case it would be what you call viewpoint discrimination, which the Supreme Court and a number of federal courts have ruled on.

There is more to the story but the basic concept is the local Government wqants to restrict free speach on private property to the point you can't even have a Bible verse posted without getting ti approved and paying $25 to them.

He can post the signs. He just needs a permit. Not saying I agree with it, but they aren't 100% stopping him. I think it's a bullshit ordinance. Hopefully he wins the suit.

If you have to wait for a permit, you do not have free speach. You have conditional speach based on a Government mandate to first get a permit. Right now there is a case before the suppreme Court where screaming nasty things at the family of dead soldiers during burials is most likely going to be protected as free speach even though it is directed at a grieving family as a specific assault but a sign in your yard should be censored and controlled by Government?

I give you three guesses what political leanings this town has......

Does this mean everyone of every belief needs a permit because of an ordinance? Christianity is facing an all out assault. Where is our religeous freedom? Probably in some Mosque somewhere. sh t we should have just stayed in England. Why did anyone bother moving here and fighting for religeous freedom just to get slammed later on?

You make a better point than you might think Ren.....

We fled to America to enjoy Religious freedom but part of that was how England had used religion as an extension of control over the masses.

Today, instead of trying to use religion, the Progressives have decided to try and transform Government into their God. An all powerful entitity who can take away or give prosperity at it's whim. Obama sees himself as a kind of "pope" of Government, with Pelosi and reid and the rest all taking up possitions similar to Patriarchs and archbishops of their Government religion.

But they hacve a problem, most Americans still believe in God at their core even if they don't actively partisipate in regular religious services. When we are stressed or in trouble we instinctively turn to God, and that is a real mess for the Progressives who want to replace God with their Government god.

So the Progressives need to erase God, and the best way to do that is to attack God and those who believe in God from every angle they can think of.

I made the point I intended to make. I don't care who doesn't like it. I know some Christians have given other Christians a bad name. Insanity is not selective, or should I say mental illness. Look at Osama Bin Laden. Think he's sane?

I find what emkay said about a Muslim mayor in a gay friendly town interesting. Here are my thoughts on that. The gay movement will be supported until Islam gets a firm foot hold then katy bar the door. All hell is going to break loose. I'm not saying it will be to day, tomorrow or ever. But Islam's main goal is world domination and they are encouraged to lie or do whatever it takes to make that happen including putting up with some homosexuals. Unfortunately unless the rest of the world wises up. It's gonna happen folks.

I don't really know what you are intending to say here so I'll leave it alone. Anyways on a personal level..I am fine with the man as a person. He can be gay and muslim and rainbow colored with a partial siamese twin growing out of his neck...I'm not judging. I personally am not liberal having come from a large blue collar family that realllly work hard we are conservative from the get go, but I am willing to give him a chance. I don't believe all muslims are looking for world domination, or that all Islam are liars. Those are generalizations based on a few. I think many just want some degree of acceptance. I honestly thought it was find of funny...my Dad is obviously older and was mortified at the thought of a "Muslim" mayor and he's GAY too! Most people thought he wasn't in contention at all..and here he is blowing away other highly funded individuals. I just hope he's ready to get serious is all.

As for the signs...yes we all have the freedom of speech...and the bible verses may not bother everyone, but what if I had gigantic signs all over my property spouting verses of the Queran etc. etc. I doubt everyone would be happy with the whole freedom of speech law. Yes we have freedom of speech..doesn't mean we should always say what's on our mind :D We have property bylaws that require a yard to be kept in a clean and tidy manner..perhaps it was ugly too lol. Just imagine..you have a nice well kept yard and next door is a loon with signs all over the damn place. If I have to keep my lawn a certain height and my paths clear then I guess a bunch of signs could fall into a bylaw dispute.

Actually I have an example lol. One time we were driving through some small towns in rural Alberta. Most do not preach religious or polital views too heavily but there are some outlying rural pockets that are heavily religious and they like to tell everyone about it. In one place in particular...huge signs..in front yards of the anti-abortion nature. Pictures of suctioned out baby parts etc. etc...with the same pro-life slogans so familiar. I am not all for abortions...but I wouldn't want pictures of dead babies in my face everyday. Freedom of speech or not...I don't think I'd be impressed living in and around there.

Therefore...if his signs are okay...all signs are okay. If he has to say things so loudly..and his message is so important, pay the 25 dollars.

Free speach is free speach, either you have it or you do not. Being forced to pay for the right to say something is not free speach.

As far as the gay Muslim thing, I wonder at the kind of acceptence he would get in a Muslim Country......

I have no idea what the Muslim community thinks at all. I'm guessing acceptance for the gay part wouldn't be acceptable...but who knows. Craig works with a man who is Seik. It's against their religion to cut their hair or shave and they are supposed to bathe multiple times a day and carry a knife thing as well. He shaves and cuts his hair, doesn't wear his turban and wears a small symbol of the knife he is supposed to carry around his neck. I think they have modernized a little to accomodate here. In their native country these modernizations wouldn't be acceptable. His mother who lives here cries when he shaves and cuts his hair lol.

Well my only real complaint in general is where a lot of complaints are made for people in Western society to be more accepting of religions like Islam but in Countries where Islam is practiced, they don't seem to be as accepting as they want us to be here.

Try to go as a non-Muslim and visit Mecca.....

I would take it as an opportunity to wear new and interesting clothing. When in Rome..so the saying goes. Adapt or leave..it's the same here..and for the most part, they have.

Sorry TJ..I did miss the Mecca part.

However..this is for you TJ..I thought you might find it interesting. I'm not aware of all the differences between middle eastern religions, but I was talking with Hari yesterday (the Sikh friend)..anyways..in their religion, if you visit ANY Sikh temple in the world they are obligated to feed, clothe and house you regardless of race, religion etc. if you require or ask for it. They believe in ONE god and believe it is called different things, therefore it is against their religion to judge anyone at all. I thought it was interesting. I'm not religious but I like hearing about other practices. Especially middle eastern ones where so much bias is centered. Anyways..I thought it was kinda cool.

I believe their religion also says God created life on many worlds. If they are right that could explain the UFOs....

I have a personal belief that most people of faith all worship the same God, our chosen religions are just a human expression that allows us to identify the concept of divinity in a way we can feel good about. Depending on where you grow up and what life you live can determine what frame of mind you must have to follow a religious belief system.
