Guest joemast2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 I'm running Vista Home Premium. When I try to download an exe file, the download is blocked and I get a message saying it's because of security concerns. When I click for more info, it tells me I can allow the download if I go to Microsoft Mail ( a program I don't use) and clear a check box. I do this but I still can't make the downloads. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this problem? -- joemast2007 Quote
Guest Richard Urban Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 What program are you using to download the .exe file. Where are you downloading it from. DETAILS please. Maybe others could check to see if "they" can download it. If they can't you likely can't either. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) "joemast2007" <joemast_at_polaris_dot_net> wrote in message news:EC7EA868-28C6-4CB1-B871-06025F7C40C5@microsoft.com... > I'm running Vista Home Premium. Guest joemast2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I'm using IE7 to try to download an intelligent updater file (20071112-017-i32.exe) from from Symantec.com. This is a new problem which I'm thinking may be related to a new security patch for Microsioft mail that auto-updated from Microsoft on 10/11. The file completely downloads and is copying to my desktop when the download is interupted with a Windows Security Warning: Windows has found this file to be potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has denied access to this file. The details refer to Windows mail and gives instructions about allowing access to exe attachments by clearing a checkbox in Windows mail security. I've followed the instructions but the problem persists. -- joemast2007 "Richard Urban" wrote: > What program are you using to download the .exe file. Guest Red Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Hiya, I have vista ultimate and it too wont let me donwload .exe files. I find this incredibly annoying and amusing since the 2x .exe programmes it has blocked access to are:- Microsoft office 2007 ultimate trial Microsoft office Accounting Pro trial Anychance we can get to know where the settings are that stop the os blocking downloads of .exe files The help centre's just state how to get mail to stop doing it and not the os. I would of thought that vista would block microsoft own programmes tho style_emoticons/ Thanks, Jon "joemast2007" wrote: > I'm running Vista Home Premium. Guest Red Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Microsofts customer support Sucks Officially!!! I have just had 3 phone calls with the states (From the UK) which has cost me over $40 For the last person to tell me that you wont help me because it is a trial product I even spoke to a manager who was far from helpfull!! all the differnt departments wanted to do was blame one another, then ask me to call toshiba who pre-installed my os, and none of the accounting professional team could help me install it, cos it was an os issue and passed me onto the customer service line again, where they wanted me to spent $59.99 on top of the already $40 i had just spent!!!!!!! I am a very annoyed customer!!!! Please can you tell me how to let the MICROSOFT VISTA OPERATING SYSTEM run downloaded MICROSOFT PROGRAMMES!!! And who do i need to forward this total lack of customer service onto, so that they can try and sort it!! Sorry for ranting. This are peer support forums and any responses you receive here are given by folks who volunteer their time to help out. There's no need to bump your post when it is less than a day old. Secondly you're going to have to provide more detail before anyone can help you. What is the _exact_ error message you're receiving? Exactly what steps are you taking that lead up to this error message? Simply stating that Vista "won't let me download .exe files" doesn't provide nearly enough information for anyone to give you a reasonably helpful response. -- Paul Adare MVP - Virtual Machines http://www.identit.ca Code: Virus lasting about three to five days, accompanied by sore throat, runny nose and fever. Guest Red Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Hi Paul, Due to the timezone difference, this was bumped as it was the first thing i did when i woke up this morning. I wasnt aware that a microsoft.com forum was administrated by volunteers, I thought it was staffed. Thanks for coming back to me, i am sorry but i was still seething over my support call yesterday, which i would still like to escalate as i feel i recieved poor service. I will re download one of the .exe's now and see what the exact error is, it went something like, xxx blocked access to the potentially harmfull file xxx.exe this was downloading the office ultimate trial and the accounting pro trial. Thanks for your attention on this. i just want to get my business machine running again "Paul Adare" wrote: > On Tue, 13 Nov 2007 06:18:00 -0800, Red wrote: > > > Hiya, > > I have vista ultimate and it too wont let me donwload .exe files. > > > > I find this incredibly annoying and amusing since the 2x .exe programmes it > > has blocked access to are:- > > > > Microsoft office 2007 ultimate trial > > Microsoft office Accounting Pro trial > > > > Anychance we can get to know where the settings are that stop the os > > blocking downloads of .exe files > > > > The help centre's just state how to get mail to stop doing it and not the os. > > > > I would of thought that vista would block microsoft own programmes tho style_emoticons/ > > In the first place you need to have a little patience. Guest Red Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Ok, ive just tried to download the Microsoft Accounting Professional trial again. The filename is x13-40152.exe The Error for this file is:- Windows Security Warning Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer. Windows has blocked access to this file Name: X13-40152.exe How does this protect my computer?(hyperlink) On clicking the hyperlink , windows help and support appears and shows " Why can't i view an attachment in Windows Mail" Windows mail blocks certain types of file attachments that are commonly used to spread e-mail viruses.................. you get the idea I think this wasnt caught in the testing phase, its a bit annoying that the help and support shows Mail which is nothing to do with the download and windows blocking access. As i previously mentioned, i cannot see anywhere in folder attributes or windows defender, which where my first thoughts on what might be stopping this. Please let us know how to stop this, or ultimately change it so we can run downloaded .exe if we trust the source they are coming from i.e. Microsoft websites Thanks "Red" wrote: > Hi Paul, > Due to the timezone difference, this was bumped as it was the first thing i > did when i woke up this morning. > > I wasnt aware that a microsoft.com forum was administrated by volunteers, I > thought it was staffed. > > Thanks for coming back to me, i am sorry but i was still seething over my > support call yesterday, which i would still like to escalate as i feel i > recieved poor service. > > I will re download one of the .exe's now and see what the exact error is, it > went something like, xxx blocked access to the potentially harmfull file > xxx.exe > > this was downloading the office ultimate trial and the accounting pro trial. > > Thanks for your attention on this. i just want to get my business machine > running again > > "Paul Adare" wrote: > > > On Tue, 13 Nov 2007 06:18:00 -0800, Red wrote: > > > > > Hiya, > > > I have vista ultimate and it too wont let me donwload .exe files. > > > > > > I find this incredibly annoying and amusing since the 2x .exe programmes it > > > has blocked access to are:- > > > > > > Microsoft office 2007 ultimate trial > > > Microsoft office Accounting Pro trial > > > > > > Anychance we can get to know where the settings are that stop the os > > > blocking downloads of .exe files > > > > > > The help centre's just state how to get mail to stop doing it and not the os. > > > > > > I would of thought that vista would block microsoft own programmes tho style_emoticons/ > > > > In the first place you need to have a little patience. Guest Red Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 hi Paul, I am just trying to save the file to disk. I am using a one week old Toshiba Qosmio G.45 notebook which came pre-installed with vista ultimate. It has Internet Explorer version 7.0.6000 ..16546 user account control is disabled. Internet protection mode is off. The URL is http://www.ideawins.com/OAProDownloads1.aspx I am pretty certain that vista would block any.exe file as mentioned previously it also blocked Microsoft office ultimate trial. I have not made any adjustments to Internet explorer. There seem to be other posts in other forums showing other people having the same problems. So I think this is a default option set in vista where it automatically blocks access to.exe files due to potential virus problems. I just tried it 3 ways using Vista Ultimate. One Standalone, one in test Domain "A" and one in test Domain "B". Standalone machine worked fine to download the file and I was able to launch it. (launching it unpacked files to a temp directory and then started the install of Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007). Member of test Domain "A" that has very relaxed GPO settings, same as above. Test Domain "B" where I have very strict GPO settings, including a security setting to prevent downloading of files with Internet Explorer, doanload was blocked. Quote

I too am running Vista Ultimate on a new machine. I have tried everything I could think of --- disabling user control, disabling windows defender entirely, turned internet explorer protected mode off, checked every place in my firewall (mcafee), have windows firewall disabled but still get that same annoying message. I get the exact error message: Windows Security Warning (image of red shield with X inside it) Windows has found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file. Name: nameoffile.exe How does this help me protect my computer (link to help file telling of file attachments in outlook) Yes, I have checked Windows Outlook but it says only to rename the files to attach them or upload them to a server such as MSN. However, this does not address the fact that EXEs are not allowed to be dowloaded at all. I have found a workaround for all of us that are frustrated to tears over this big brother style of "controlling viruses" ie we know what is good for you, you do not. There are two workarounds: Work around #1 When you click on a download link and it is an exe file, choose save as and rename the exe portion to .ok or some other nonsense and change save as file type from application to "all files" When you want to use the file, rename it back to exe. Work Around #2 Click on the download link choosing "save as". Have the location folder you are downloading to open and visable. When the file completes download, you'll get the Security Warning. DO NOT CLICK OK! Right click on the file you just downloaded, ignoring the Security Warning Window and choose "copy" Then go back to the security warning and click ok. You'll see your download disappear. But .. right click and choose "paste" in the download window and Voila! - your download is back. Good Luck. Please email me if anybody finds a real fix, please. Guest joemast2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hi Red, My system is a stand-alone machine. I had no problems with downloads until recently, which leads me to believe that the cause may be one or more of the Microsoft security updates to Microsoft Mail, since the security message I get directs me to Micorsoft mail to fix the problem, (which, of course, it doesn't). I have resorted to using the work around suggested by psgrafx@gmail. I download the exe file. When the security warning pop up, I ignore it and immediately right click on the downloaded file and rename it, changing the exe extension to something else. Then I click on the security warning which now ignores the downloaded file and I can now change it back to exe and go on with my business. -- joemast2007 "Red" wrote: > Hi Seth, > > Its a standalone machine. > > Did you reset the machine to defaults? or restore it with just ultimate? > > I dont know if joemast2007 is still following this forum, however if your > out there m8, what was your setup style_emoticons/ (hoping your still following this lol) > > Thanks Jon > > "Seth" wrote: > > > "Red" <Red@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > > news:C47C682E-9EA4-43AE-AFC2-4D4D3B2BCEBD@microsoft.com... > > > hi Paul, > > > > > > I am just trying to save the file to disk. > > > > > > I am using a one week old Toshiba Qosmio G.45 notebook which came > > > pre-installed with vista ultimate. Guest Red Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 Ok, well its over a month later now. The problem is still here And now i have noticed that it even blocks .exe files that are copmpressed inside a zip folder So Vista does not allow ANY .exe Microsoft product to be installed via the inter Does not allow compressed files to be installed properly HOW DO I GET A REFUND ON VISTA!!!!! On the grounds no one can fix this problem and therefore if Vista cannot run ..exe's it is not fit for purpose. Anyone got any ideas??????? Guest flippers1113@sympatico.ca Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Hi, when I try to open an attatchment from my e-mail it asks whether I want to save or open. No matter which one I choose it shows that it is downloading then it all of a sudden disappears, same thing with trying to down load updates for the computer. Can you tell me why this is and what I can do to fix the problem. Thank you Kevin Phillips Quote
Guest Richard Urban Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Vista CAN run .exe files. Vista CAN download .exe files. Millions do just that. You have a configuration problem somewhere in YOUR computer. That does not make Vista "not fit for the purpose" - as you say. I suggest you call Microsoft support. Yes, you may have to "pay" to have a live tech on the phone to figure out where you have gone wrong. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Red" <Red@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C845D492-6AEF-4A24-9D62-F3CE082FDD31@microsoft.com... > Ok, well its over a month later now. > > The problem is still here > And now i have noticed that it even blocks .exe files that are copmpressed > inside a zip folder > > So Vista does not allow ANY .exe Microsoft product to be installed via the > inter > Does not allow compressed files to be installed properly > > HOW DO I GET A REFUND ON VISTA!!!!! > > On the grounds no one can fix this problem and therefore if Vista cannot > run > .exe's it is not fit for purpose. > > Anyone got any ideas??????? > > "Red" wrote: > >> Hi Seth, >> >> Its a standalone machine. >> >> Did you reset the machine to defaults? or restore it with just ultimate? >> >> I dont know if joemast2007 is still following this forum, however if your >> out there m8, what was your setup style_emoticons/ (hoping your still following this >> lol) >> >> Thanks Jon >> >> "Seth" wrote: >> >> > "Red" <Red@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> > news:C47C682E-9EA4-43AE-AFC2-4D4D3B2BCEBD@microsoft.com... >> > > hi Paul, >> > > >> > > I am just trying to save the file to disk. >> > > >> > > I am using a one week old Toshiba Qosmio G.45 notebook which came >> > > pre-installed with vista ultimate. Guest Red Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Hiya folks, didnt see he 2nd page of this post... lol To richard Urban.. get off ya high horse and lear to ead.. theres loads of us having these issues and mines an out of the box setup... so go away if you have nothing usefull to add... To everyone else, its a shame we still cant quite nail this, i must confess i was already downloading the file, ignoring the warning and running it in the background. However I now hae a problem where if you extract a zip file nd it contains a ..exe, it actually pauses the extraction process and you end up with a .exe with 0kb, and therefore you cant just run it, which is a bit of i nightmare?? Anyone got an clever ideas for this scenario?? Cheers all and HAPPY NEW YR ( that even includes you richard) "flippers1113@sympatico.ca" wrote: > > Hi, > when I try to open an attatchment from my e-mail it asks whether I want to > save or open.
