Guest jnc@comcast.net Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I, too, am having the same issue. System was fine yesterday ... isn't today. I have followed every step outlined in this thread ... even run the /salvagerepository command MULTIPLE times with restarts ... no good ... I do not have MS OneCare installed. I use Kapersky Anti-virus (Microsoft lists this as one of the recommended products). Again, everything has been working for months with no issues. Now, Windows security center shows Defender is off and their is no anti-virus software installed. Defender itself shows it is running, and Kapersky shows that it is running normally. Again, I have followed every step suggested in this thread ... I'm still having problems. Also, I tried to do a system restore and that failed as well with "The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error may not reoccur (ox800452f3)". Advice and additional help?? Just until recently defender has been working fine- in the security center it says that Malware protection/virus protection is not located on my computer. Then it says that Defender is off. I try to turn on but comes back with message that says that there are no new definitions avail to download to defender. I need help... Guest Miss Julie Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I do not have any other software; except for AVG, my system is entirely protected by Microsoft (for good or ill <g>), but i periodically get a message saying Windows Defender is turned off. In Control Panel, WD tells me "No unwanted or harmful software is detected. Your computer is running normally." (This would suggest that WD is in business.) When i click on the Security Center icon (the shield), it allows me to turn WD back on, but then i get that message that says "There are no new definitions available to download for Windows Defender," looking like an error message. So, at the moment, WD is running, but i'd like to know what is turning it off, which always happens when i reboot, but also at other times.
