Hi, I had earlier installed, windows live one care family safety! It was

working absolutely fine, until one day I scanned my computer completely to

find deadly highly infected trojan, which had infected more than 250 files on

my computer! It also had infected windows family safety too, I used Spyware

Doctor, from PC Tools website! My computer is always updated with the lastest

updates on all the application software I run, including windows updates, so

I have an updated version, Windows XP Professional SP 3!

After quarantining the trojan, it asked me to reboot my computer for removal

of certain other infected files! I did so! After reboot however, it wasn't

able to find certain installation files that family safety works with! Before

rebooting, I removed the quarantined trojan from my computer without setting

up a restore point! I quickly un-installed family safety! I scanned my

computer again, and removed more infections!

The problem now is, even after removing family safety, my FDD keeps blinking

every 5 seconds, and it flashes a message, " The feature you are trying to

use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not that is not available.

Insert the 'Status' disk and click OK. " The CPU also goes bezzerk and

comsumes alot of processing power before this message is displayed every time

I start-up my computer! The computer slows down quite considerably! When I

try to ignore the message by clicking on Cancel, the windows installer rolls

back, and gets initiated again, and the FDD goes blinking several times, and

the same message gets displayed again! I tried everything I could! But I am

not able to stop that message from appearing, kindly help me in solving this

problem as quickly as possible!

It's really irritating to just leave that message idol till I finish working

on my computer. and then say cancel and in quick succession turn off my

computer, otherwise, my computer doesn't seem to shut down either! I have do

it all at a particular time, in order to shut down my computer in a manner it

has to properly be shut down!

Thanks!

Cliff!

It doesn't sound like your computer is virus/malware-free. Simply having

that message appear would not cause the symptoms you are describing.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2....emoving_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do

all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using

Multi_AV in Vista.

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your

malware here, at Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums

listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. You will

generally be asked to:

1. Download and execute HiJack This! (HJT) -

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/th.../HJTInstall.exe

2. Disable Notepad's word wrap - In Notepad.exe; Format --> uncheck; "Word

wrap"

3. Download/run Deckard's System Scanner -

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe

4. Save the scan results (Main.txt and Extra.txt)

5. And then post the contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt in your post at the

forum you chose. DO NOT POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these are

just suggestions based on many years of being a professional computer tech;

suggestions based on what you've written. You should not take my

suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. If you can't do the work yourself

(and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the

machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent

of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops

are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be

so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have

all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

Some security apps. will generate false positives with service pack 3, and

unfortunatly for you PC tools spyware doctor is one of them. you can read

more at the link below.

I would suggest a repair install to replace the files mistakenly removed.
