smutt butt Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Why is there not a maximum driving age? We have all seen it, a terrified old fart going 45 down the highway, driving 20 mph under the limit on a back road then slaming on the brakes to go around a curve. For those who say i am being an asshole let me ask you this... If you think an 85 year old has the "right" to drive then why not let a 12 year old have a license? How about a 10 year old? hugo Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I think after 70 they should take a test every couple of years, Quote The power to do good is also the power to do harm. - Milton Friedman "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison
snafu Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 We have an elderly lady that I work with. She was a danger to the road and so a supervisor reported her to DMV. Well DMV took her license away from her but the Union won a grievance for her that management shouldn't have intervened. If the supervisor had just called in as a concerned citizen that would've been OK. But she called in and told them she was her supervisor so now she now gets free taxi cab rides to and from work. Amazing... I will remember that. I was thinking of reporting my Mother for her own safety and that of the others on the road. She is 83...she has TIA's which are mini strokes, during which she becomes dizzy and faint...she caused an accident where SHE cut someone off, he hit her of course, HE had the right of way. My Mom's mind was SO gone, she blamed the other guy... I completely agree with you, I think no matter you driving record, people of a certain age, 70 sounds right too me, should have to go on and take a new eye test, written test AND driving test...YEARLY, this would seriously cut down on them being out on the road. Why is my Mother still driving??? My LOVING brother, who likes too tell himself he is taking care of Mom, lets her, BECAUSE he is too lazy to drive her himself, he is too busy stealing her money...hasn't had a job in 7 years now... IgnoranceKills Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 something all the dumbass's must realize is that most children that are of legal age still arent mature or responsible enough for a license. So lowering the driving age would be a good way to kill all your ten year olds. Quote

Maybe you should read over this more clearly, I think what he meant was that allowing people of advanced years too drive is no better then letting children that are TOO young drive... rizzo Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I think after 70 they should take a test every couple of years, I know that in Maine that used to be the case. My Grandma had to take a road test every 2 years after a certain age. (I can't remember what it was) But the AARP stepped in and cried "discrimination"! So now you have to take a vision test when your license expires, but that's it. I know that your license can be taken away if someone calls the DMV with concerns. But other than that, you can drive forever. Quote
Lethalfind Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 In Texas where my Mom lives, if you don't get a ticket or an accident, they just mail you a sticker that you put on the back of your license, you don't even have to go into the license office...Thats frightening to think of that a person of that age doesn't even have to prove she has the mental ability to ask for a renewal on her license. Ahhlee Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 In my town it's not unusual for the old people to just stop in the middle of the street while they're driving to look at something. People tolerate it because "oh, that's just Mr. So and So. He's old". Around here people expect that to happen, but when old Mr. So and So decides to go out on the highway or take a little trip to the city, he's likely to kill someone driving like that. I agree with hugo. Driving tests should be more frequent for people over the age of 70. Like I was always told when I was a teenager, driving is a privilege - not a right. Quote
cool_dude Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 You might as well ask yourself why do they still let handicaps, alchoholics, drug users, and morons drive. Quote

eddo Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I am pretty sure that out here in AZ, once you trun 65 you do get tested every couple years. I'm not that old, so I don't really need to know that for sure yet. 1 Quote I'm trusted by more women.
Feckless Wench Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 In the UK the old farts have to have an eye test every 2 years after the age of 70 to continue to drive. My father passes his eye test but scares the shit out of me with his driving. He's literally an accident waiting to happen! I think a reaction speed test is necessary along with the eye test. KathyA Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 It should be mandatory, that after a certain age, tests should be done to determine one's right to drive.. And more than just visual acuity..All motor skills (gross and fine) should definately be tested to. As should mental capacity.. But that leads to privacy issues.. And will probably never be made into law while I am alive.. Quote I want a sensitive man - one who'll cry when I hit him.
