Guest lkindratpratt Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Hi, I am attempting to load AVG onto my computer, but every time I do, it tells me I'm already running an anti-virus program, and I know it's not a good idea to run two at the same time. I previously had the CA Anti-Virus Suite, but I've uninstalled that program successfully. The only other thing I can think of is the McAfee VirusScan which came with Vista, but I assume was just a free trial and is now out-of-date. How do I find out what the computer thinks I'm still running? And if it is this McAfee trial, how do I get rid of it? I don't see that option anywhere. I'm really not that computer savvy, so any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much!! Quote

Guest lkindratpratt Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Thank you for your suggestions, unfortunately, that's the problem, I CAN'T find McAfee under Programs. Is it part of "Windows Defender?" When I check my "Security Status" on the Control Panel, it tells me that McAfee VirusScan is out-of-date, but that it's turned on. Yet I cannot find anything relating to McAfee under Programs, no option on the Control Panel to turn it off, or anything having to do w/ another anti-virus program in general...any ideas? I'm at a loss! If it's there, does it have an uninstall option? If it's not there, try this: Using Explorer, open Computer, then your C drive, then Program Files. Look through that group for anything McAfee. What do you find? > >"Nonny" wrote: > >> On Sat, 14 Jun 2008 12:42:00 -0700, lkindratpratt >> <lkindratpratt@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >> >> >Hi, >> > >> >I am attempting to load AVG onto my computer, but every time I do, it tells >> >me I'm already running an anti-virus program, and I know it's not a good idea >> >to run two at the same time. Guest DL Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 The McAfee web site will have a tool, or instructions, for complete removal of their software You have looked in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs for McAfee? Windows Defender is an MS anti spyware/malaware tool installed as part of Vista "lkindratpratt" <lkindratpratt@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A595BE44-9A61-4AD9-B52E-6BF17F7B3CAB@microsoft.com... > Thank you for your suggestions, unfortunately, that's the problem, I CAN'T > find McAfee under Programs. Guest Robinb Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Windows Defender is part of Vista and Cannot be uninstalled. Besides Windows Defender is a antispyware program not an antivirus program. When going into the Control Panel, put Vista in "classic view" and look for the icon "Programs" Double Click that one Wait for the list to load and scroll down and look for Mcafee Antivirus Program Highlight it and double click it It will ask you if you really want to remove it and you click "yes" It should uninstall the program If it is not there then you need to go to Mcafee's web site to look around to find out how to uninstall it It might be a registry entry that is holding it up and they should be able to tell you how to uninstall it. You cannot put AVG or any other antivirus program on if you are running another one especially if Vista is telling you in the Security Center that it is still there. robin "lkindratpratt" <lkindratpratt@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A595BE44-9A61-4AD9-B52E-6BF17F7B3CAB@microsoft.com... > Thank you for your suggestions, unfortunately, that's the problem, I CAN'T > find McAfee under Programs.
