I'll second that! The Major Geeks forum post listed above

is an excellent guide to keeping your computer free of malware. Concise,

easy to read, with links to download the need apps. There are many other

good guides like this out there, but it never hurts to spread the word about

any of them. Good find Dave.

It's mostly the usual common knowledge security nonsense:

Install this, install that, MS firewall is bad, frequently scan for

this, frequently scan for that....

Only a few true goodies like "Use restriced user accounts" and

"Security starts with you" is found there.

Most hilarious part is that the poster labels him- or herself "Malware

Expert". That's a biiiiig LOL. The steps on how to deal with malware

infections clearly shows he or she is not even close to being an

"expert".

But he really is one of the good guys! It says so here:

I just wish he'd tell me what he believes I did to upset his master at

This place is far too secretive when it comes to knowing who is actually

much time to have an honest and impartial discussion.

PS I note that David H Lipman is now listing AumHa as one of his

Yes. I can see he says so, himself...

According to http://aumha.org/vsop.htm he seems to be a wine salesman

and a professional singer - being an IT hobbyist since 1999.

I've been in the IT business more than twice as long.

That doesn't necessarily mean that you are one of the good guys! (but I

not seen you post until recently, 'Root Kit'. May I ask what made you come

here ......... or were you using a different posting name previously?

Are you implying that the likes of Bill Castner and Robear Dyer at AumHa do

not give good advice and/or genuine help? Mr Lipman has added AumHa, I

suspect, because I have nudged him into showing his approval of the site

(but I may be wrong on this!)

Have you ever considered that a site purporting to help 'clean' a users

machine might actually leave it in an infected state? (even if the machine

wasn't infected in the first place!). From what I have seen, the 'average'

user of a computer will have absolutely no idea if they are really clean

and will rely totally on being told so by a 'guru'!

Doesn't really bear thinking about, does it?!!!

You're exactly right. On the net you better be highly skeptical and

learn to think for yourself.

Anyway, my comment was also not so much related to being good or bad.

I'm sure P A Bear is a good and probably even nice guy. That doesn't

mean he's especially knowledgeable within the area of computer

security, though. Especially not since computing seems to be only a

hobby of his - and only for a limited time. He's one of those perfect

instruments for security companies to help promote their products. You

just need to have in mind that what makes sense in a B2C market place

does not necessarily match with what makes good sense in terms of real

security.

<span style="color:blue">

>(but I perceive that you are! <grin>)</span>

Depends on the definition of good, I guess. I'm definitely not a black

hat hacker, if that's what you mean. I've sometimes been suspected of

having bad intentions because I often rant at security companies and

products and often talk against so called common knowledge, though.

Such accusations are just laughable.

I've been around for long. If you can't recognize me by my nick, you

can recognize me by my e-mail address which hasn't changed or by the

often controversial content followed by foolish "You're trolling"

posts. I never change my e-mail address - in order to give people who

can't handle the truth a chance to filter me out.

I'm not implying anything. I'm trying to be pretty straight forward in

my opinions.

<span style="color:blue">

Sure. Kind of happens all the time. That's the way much malware is

being spread, isn't it? (Just to be precise, I'm talking about

malicious sites tricking you into downloading some kind of "cleaning

tool". I'm not making any assumptions about the site in question.)

<span style="color:blue">

>From what I have seen, the 'average'

Even the best of experts have difficulties in positively declaring a

machine "clean". But mostly users are happy to just have the symptom

removed.

BTW, what you are describing is the sole reason why there's even a

market for anti-crap at all.

<span style="color:blue">

>Doesn't really bear thinking about, does it?!!!</span>

Why not? It's not until you start thinking, that there's a chance you

might learn something.

So what? Many Geek Squad employees and admins have been "in the IT

business" longer than either of us, I'm sure:

I have a very successful IT consulting business but I choose not to brag

The fact that ~BD~ comes to my defense despite our many /contretemps/ in the

past speaks even louder of my capabilities.

a history that your use of "archive/no" can't hide.

Ah, I think this may be the same b_nice that was rude to me as well in the

past. You have my support, Robear. However, I would like to see b_nice

prove to us that his expertise are beyond everyone else's expertise. So

b_nice did you start working with computers when BASIC was new or before that

and what programs and coding are you familiar with? Do you know C++,

Fortran, COBOL, etc. In addition, how proficient are you with cryptography

and how high a level of encryption can you break. Have you managed to crack

through a 128 bit cipher strength and how about 256 bit AES encryption bit or

448 bit Blowfish encryption. Please enlighten us all to how brilliant you

are.

I very much value the input you have made here John - sorry, Root Kit!

Thank you for participating and sharing your views. I'd like to apologise

for my failure to respond earlier, but I've been away on my boat for a while

+ it slipped my mind whilst I was considering how best to answer you. I'm

sorry.

I do feel that you (maybe) should have responded to Dan ........ there is

still time! style_emoticons/

With regard to your "(Just to be precise, I'm talking about malicious sites

tricking you into downloading some kind of "cleaning tool". I'm not making

any assumptions about the site in question.)" ................

My niggling worry is that folk with problems are 'directed' to all manner of

'help forums' (see David H Lipman's posts for examples!) where 'experts'

attempt to clean the users machine. At the end of the 'cleaning' the average

user will have absolutely no idea of whether or not his/her machine is still

compromised ....... or soon will be via a 'backdoor' left open. AFAICT,

no-one is responsible in any way for 'checking the checkers' - it really

does seem to be the Wild West all over again!

LOL!! I know I am being mean to b_nice aka root kit but what goes around

comes around. Robear is really cool and will continue to get my support as

well as professionals like Chris Quirke, MVP who I really admire for his

wisdom and expertise especially in regards to the 9x operating system

specifically as far as the safety and security discussion of 9x operating

systems via NT operating systems. I also appreciate the United States

Government and its Department of Homeland Security especially in regards to

the Computer Emergency Readiness Team and all the hard work they do to keep

our information secure from enemy threats whether they be domestic and/or

international.

A point of note, I set my computer recently to be hacked via remote access

in tracking and secure mode and someone fell for the bait but the fool hacker

who took the trap was unfortunately a novice hacker and not the high end

hacker that I was trying to trap. I will continue venturing dangerously in

the future via the appropriate safeguards and via the appropriate tracking

and catching protocol.

Let the Games Begin. BTW, movies that I really enjoy and you might want to

watch are Sneakers -- 1980's one with Robert Redford, Enemy of the State, The

Game, The original Matrix, and of course my all time favorite "It's a

Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. <grin>

I learned that lesson the hard way of trying to cover my tracks. It is next

to impossible these days. However, governments can attempt it via using

servers in other countries to try and mask their footprints but it is only a

matter of time before these governments slip up and our caught by the

International Community. <smile>

BD does NOT know why folk don't give straight-forward and honest answers to

his questions.

BD does NOT believe everything he reads on a screen, in a newspaper or hears

on the radio.

BD ....... DOES question things he doesn't understand. It has little to do

with computers.

BD does NOT know why he was banned from Annexcafe forums .............. nor

from Aumha - the only two areas concerned. I am more than happy for Robear

to explain the facts to everyone here and now .................. bring

things out into the open, PLEASE!

BD, I am actually surprised that I am responding to you. You need to be

polite in newsgroups. You need to try and help others if you can. You need

to allow others to help you and not accuse them falsely and degrade them as

you have done to Robear. You need to be humble and even if you have been in

IT for a long time then you need to prove it to us because there has been so

many lies that no one believes or trusts you anymore. You need to respect

MVP's even if they sometimes make mistakes because we are all human. You

talk about your own brilliance as being in IT twice as long as Robear but

what have you contributed to help other users. If you are willing to really

change and show us that you have changed then possibly restrictions on you

may someday be lifted. Finally, do not expect me to make a habit of

responding to your posts because you hurt me with your words in the past as

well.

Dan - with respect - I think you may be confusing me (BoaterDave) with Root

Kit

Perhaps you should re-read the whole of this thread again. Perhaps you'd

then report back if there was any confusion. Thanks.

Dave

PS Thank you for responding at all btw! <wink>

Don't worry. Surprise can lead to a lot of positives.

Where is this stated?

<span style="color:blue">

Huh? - Newsgroups are forums for discussion. They are not support

forums, just in case you didn't know. Anyway, helping others is what I

often do. Just not in the common way of doing things. Instead I'm

opening the eyes of those willing to learn and make them start

thinking for themselves. Those who are ignorant to learn is waste of

time anyway.

Degrades and insults are purely subjective matters.

Says who? I've no reason to.

See, I didn't mention this to brag about it.

<span style="color:blue">

>because there has been so many lies </span>

Now you're starting something very ugly here.

So first of all you better state exactly in what respect I have been

lying and what I have been lying about! - And you better be very

precise, little man! Otherwise, I expect to have heard the final word

from you.

<span style="color:blue">

Trust and belief from people I only know from a newsgroup is of very

low priority to me.

<span style="color:blue">

Actually I didn't.

Once again. Newsgroups are discussion forums. Not contribution forums

to gain some kind of rank.

<span style="color:blue">

Are you somehow in charge here?

<span style="color:blue">

I won't loose any sleep over that.

<span style="color:blue">

>because you hurt me with your words in the past as well.</span>

Words in a newsgroup shouldn't be able to hurt. Only when people with

low self esteem decide to be hurt or insulted can this occur. Very

similar to people choosing to be conveniently "insulted" by some

cartoons.
