Guest febsr Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 My Pavilion Vista laptop has been running slower and slower. Especially while on the web. Pages take forever to come up. Even program files or the All Programs menu. I have tried disabling Windows Defender thinking it might be scanning everything. Is this a possibility? Thanks. -- febsr Quote

Guest febsr Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I use AVG and Adaware regularly. And I run disk cleanup almost daily. I have noticed a small difference since disabling Defender, but not much. I've tried to eliminate the most obvious causes, but still this Vista unit runs much slower than any previous OS I've used. Way too many services are running but eliminating any which seemed unnecessary caused problems and I had to restore them. Any suggestions? -- febsr Quote

Guest febsr Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 What do you suggest I use to scan? I haven't found any program that finds and removes rootkits. -- febsr Quote

Guest NoBloatwarePlease Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Not only did I notice the same slowdown, but the program seems to disrespect any installed suite that already does the same thing. I have a perfectly good virus/spam protector that doesn't need any freakin' help, thank you very much. Windows Offender keeps popping up and (worse) quietly disrupting the performance of my own virus/spam/spyware program. Either they made this product for (a) lightweights, (style_emoticons/ to limit MS liability or Quote
Guest febsr Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Sorry for any confusion. I was asking for suggestions. I am just a grandmother who is trying to keep my computers running smoothly. I do need to rely on programs because my technical background is limited. I don't know how to reply to a post as I don't post very much. If there are some guidelines I'd be glad to read them. Thank you for your help. -- febsr Quote
Guest Beoweolf Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 When you run Vista - you really need to be sure you have the hardware to match the horsepower it takes to make it work. Vista is very sensitive to misconfiguration, driver problems, correct hardware configuration - much more so than XP, XP-Pro or any of the 2K family. Just how often do you clear your IE history and logs? Guest febsr Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I regularly clean them out about once a week. Disabling windows defender helped some, but programs have begun hanging. I have 2gb ram which seemed fine at first. Nothing obvious has changed except for the slowed down performance. -- febsr Quote

You don't keep posting to your original post with your reply posts. You select the poster you are replying to and you reply to them, like I am replying to you. Quote
Guest Mick Murphy Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Spybot Search & Destroy will. Download and install it, then scan in Safe Mode. All info below. http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program. Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it. Then SCAN with it. Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight. Important re: Safe Mode If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot the computer, and go into Safe Mode. To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow key to get to Safe Mode, then hit ENTER. RESCAN your computer with your Anti-virus and Spybot S & D while in Safe Mode. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "febsr" wrote: <span style="color:blue"> > > What do you suggest I use to scan? Have you installed all Microsoft udates? It seems that malware is rampant. An updated Defender will help. Have you downloaded and installed AVG Free 8.0? It now incluces an anti-spyware facility. Guest febsr Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Yes, I have updated AVG to 8.0 although I don't like it as much as 7.5. Disabling Windows defender did help speed it up somewhat. And I have done all windows updates except for SP1 for Vista as I have heard there are still some problems which I am hoping to temporarily avoid. febsr -- febsr Quote
