Is this a new computer or did you purchase it used? What antivirus/security

software do you have installed?

I have to ask. Are you certain the PC is legal? Windows Genuine advantage

(WGA) will not update a computer it does not believe is legal. On occasion a

computer will fail WGA, even though it is legal. You should then contact

Microsoft and have them correct the problem.

Your logs will provide some explanation as to why update failed. I have

encountered computers which had similar errors; in those cases the logs

reported corrupt catalog as the problem. Apparently that is a generic term

the program uses when it can't give you a real answer. It could be something

as simple as a corrupt catalog - different version than the OS or complex

enough to enlist the assistance of Microsoft support. As a security issue,

it should qualify as a no fee support call.

A system that does not pass WGA will still be offered Security updates.

Something is amiss with the OS if it has never updated successfully OOB.

True.

That's why I asked. Note that the OP mentioned "since acquiring"? Acquire

can mean several things - any thing from purchasing a new (or used)

computer...to accepting a gift. In particular a used computer or gift may

share a key, if the original owner transferred the PID and did not clear the

old PC.

If he has said something along the lines of I got a new computer that has

never updated, my response may have taken that into account.

Had to start the question somewhere, just wanted to rule out the possibility

of PID contention.

brand new computer with bullguard pre installed.

Was Bullguard preinstalled or did you install it ?

If it was installed by the manufacturer and the system is still under

warranty, then suggest you contact them as they are supposed to

provide support.

Since the system has never updated successfully, then it sure sounds as

if Bullguard was preinstalled.

You're right, the OP never mentioned the specifics. Just wanted to

ensure that anyone who reads this knows that MS will provide Security

updates whether a system is WGAed or not.

BTW, the OP posted that the system was purchased new which means the OEM

is supposed to support it.

Note the word "supposed" <w>
