One Firewall or more....?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've just installed Zone Alarm Security Suite which includes a firewall and

got warnings about running two firewalls. I guess I should turn off the

firewall that comes with XP Pro? Do I just turn it off (in the 'security

centre' I assume?) or do I need to uninstall something?

I use a Speedtouch 546 router in my system. I think this provides some sort

of firewall as well?

Any advice to ease my confusion would be great!

One (1) software firewall. Disable the Windows Firewall via Control Panel |

Windows Firewall.

[iMHO, installing ZASS should have disabled the Windows Firewall by

default.]

....many thanks. XP firewall is now off. If I get reminders about my PC

being 'at risk' (even though ZASS is on) is there any way of turning these

off?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3), and do so in your

first post to any MS newsgroup in the future.

Sounds like you may have a horked (bad/dirty/incomplete) install of ZASS.

What security suite, anti-virus application, and/or third-party firewall did

you have installed BEFORE you installed ZASS?

Did you uninstall all of the above via Add/Remove Programs before installing

ZASS?

Have you /purchased/ ZASS (yet)?

....sorry, yes its XP Pro SP3.

I have ZASS discs already and was running this before. I re-installed ZASS

following a hard drive failure (a week after downloading SP3). I had new

hard drives fitted and XP Pro re-installed by my local computer shop and then

used a system back-up from my external hard drive to restore files and

folders. (Fortunately, I was promted to make a back up before downloading

SP3.) I didn't check and uninstall ZASS before putting my ZASS CDs in and

re-installing so I guess I may have got some mix up here?

=> YOU MAY WANT TO PRINT OR COPY/PASTE THE FOLLOWING FOR OFFLINE REFERENCE

1. Do Resolution Method 2 here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(trust me)

2. Using IE only, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any

Windows Update-related software the machine may require then click on

CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Accept the install of any/all critical

security updates offered | Follow all prompts.

NB: Do NOT install IE7 if it's not already installed!

NB: If IE7 is installed and Windows Update offers a Root Certificates

update in Optional Software Updates category, install it to take full

advantage of IE7's enhanced security features.

3. Please confirm that Automatic Updates is enabled (cf.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525).

========================

=> Now either proceed as follows or post about your ZASS issue in the

appropriate ZA forum: http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs

=========================

4. Uninstall ZASS via Add/Remove Programs and reboot twice .

=> NB: Do not do ANYTHING else online (except #5 below) until you've got

ZASS reinstalled, properly configured, and fully patched and updated! Do

not other surfing! Do not open or reply to any emails! Do no chatting or

other downloading!

5. Rebuild the Window Management Instrumentation Repostitory per this page

of MS MVP Ramesh's: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

6a. Reinstall ZASS using your disk(s).

6b. Configure ZASS as needed/desired.

6c. Manually update ZASS (program updates and definitions updates).

Good luck!
